More akin to watching a movie than reading a book.

Personally, they don't hold my attention at all.
I have never be able to listen for more than a few minutes,

Great substitute for when you can't read (because of X activity or just blindness) but want to read.

yeah but not really, actually not at all.

in my experience you actually have to concentrate harder when listening to an audiobook than you do reading.

also great when you're exercising or commuting and can't physically read a book.

I prefer podcasts to audio books if I have to listen to someone talking. Audio isn't really suited for long-form text...

I actually retain more of the story when i hear it in an audiobook, than when i read it.
Though maybe its also because i listened to two epic audiobooks(The Road and Earth Abides, which are my 2 favorite books) and have not really read anything that has been as good imo.

The person who reads it obviously has a massive impact on the quality as well. Go download the road's audiobook and you'll prob. have a hard time stopping it.

Hell, i remember getting home from 10 hour work days, being exhausted, and lying down with my shitty old creative zen MP3 player, just listening to an audiobook. I was way too tired to read, and actually consume what i read... but listening was a cinch.

I would say its far more suited than reading. Eyes will strain after a few hours of reading, now matter how generous the font and text size. You shouldn't ever get tired listening to audio though. The only downside is for most, the audiobook will be quite a bit longer than just reading the thing. I personally read at a slower pace to fully appreciate whats written(not trying to sound like a hipster. Maybe you guys can get as much appreciation out of a text in half as much time as me) which basically has me reading outloud, but in my head... so it really ends up taking the same amount of time for me.

They're okay for when you're driving.

they are the only thing that keeps me sane at work
