I love early 2000s otaku culture. Is there any literature that comes close to replicating it? So essentially expansive worlds, innocent fun, simple positive themes of friendship. Sovlful stuff :))

Children's lit like the Moomin books or LoTR are nice but I'm looking for more stuff

Any of Ray Bradbury's short story collections including >>22297596, Penguin Highway (or again, any of Morimi's stuff), Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou if you're open to manga suggestions (it's the best for what you're looking for, trust me). One Hundred Years of Solitude isn't really about friendship or innocent fun but it feels very much like Haibane Renmei in some way I can't explain that goes beyond the shared magical realism. Interested in other people's suggestions as well.

The WORLD of Haibane Renmei is based on Hardboiled Wonderland. It's very different tonally. I enjoyed Hardboiled Wonderland well enough but if you go in expecting Haibane Renmei you'll be sorely disappointed.

Sherlock Holmes desu. Feels like a comfy OVA while the novels feel like movies.

Tangentially related, but I've been looking for English lit that deals with themes comparable to Gunslinger Girl. It's not quite what OP is describing even though innocence and friendship are themes, it's very macabre. I've always liked Gunslinger Girl because it reminds me of when my parents forced me to go to an Italian boarding school that I'm reasonably sure was run by neofascist elements within Prosegur. Basically it was a military training camp for younger teens. I've never seen print fiction that quite nails what I experienced there. Somehow it's stuff like Gunslinger Girls and Girls' Frontline that give me the same vibe. I consider it auto-therapy. Thank you in advance.

The subject matter of cute girls with guns “B-BUT they’re unstable, actually” is only something that anime as a medium can pursue to great success. I don’t think there’s anything even remotely related in English lit (you can get BROTHERhood and gruesome acts of violence, though!), it would have to be another anime or light novel or whatever Japan thing that can follow similar themes and still be taken seriously.
Of course, I’m bumping to see if anyone can prove me wrong.

The Jinx series by Sage Blackwood and the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander are the droids you're looking for.
You could also read all of the original Oz books

My favorite anime genre is 00s iyashikei, here's a chart I saved that has other books I've enjoyed on it that I think have a similar kind of vibe. I'm chasing that feeling in every medium.

Omg, I can't believe I forgot Gunslinger Girl. I used to like it in middle-school.

Glad I browse /lit/ today cause I totally forgotten about it. Thanks, anon.

>It's very different tonally.
I thought Haibane is tonally quite similar to the End of the World parts. The whole subdued, slightly unreal atmosphere of a limbo world. Plus of course the world itself, the city surrounded by walls, the mysterious aspect of it that is not clear and has to be explored etc.
