I'm not a big Dune fan but it irks me when people say Dune's characters are "flat' and "wooden" of fucking course they are, it's set several thousand years in the future and everyone's caught up in endless Machiavellian plots to kill one another. Same with another sci-fi I've read that features fully transhuman space-faring characters who are nearly immortal and nearly as alien as the aliens because it's the literal point of the novel.

>a story set in the Middle Ages is misogynistic and racist
Basically, trying to match today's values with those of times past without understanding that humans values evolved through times and we should show the past as it was instead of writing new history to today's standards. It's the thing that today's woke directors are too low IQ to comprehend and that's why mediums like movies sucks dicks and are unwatchable

Very few /lit/ users actually understand literary theory/criticism. Probably only 5 or 7 of us.

Only two?

This is a completely valid critique of a book. Some books out there are just plain boring. It is a shorthand way of saying that an author fails to use action in an engaging way.

>essentialist
I hate this cheapshot, every moron undergrad and feminist blogger wheels this one out but when asked to define it they fail. Basically, this is what they use when an author made an assertion or generalization they didn't like but they can't be bothered to demonstrate why said assertion is wrong.

Better than it was a couple years ago, a good number seem to have a desire to learn these days. We have actually had a few decent (by current standards) threads on criticism in recent times, a couple years ago any such thread would be over run by verbose autists who plotfagged their way through Death of the Author.
