I read most of these books. Personally, I'd make the following changes:
1. Add mindfulness/DBT literature to Mental Health, or as a supplement to the meditation section
2. Remove the Inner Game of Tennis, as it's mostly just mindfulness in written by a golf boomer.
3. Add Effective Notetaking by McPherson to autodidact core.
4. Replace Adler with something else - the method is too focused on lower order thinking (defining terms) instead of higher order thinking (relations and causes)
5. Add Atomic Habits or Tiny Habits to the Habits list.
6. Consider adding Convict Conditioning to the Physical Health section.
7. Potentially add "How to take smart notes" to Autodidact core or as a supplement.

Honestly, I think mnemonics and brute forcing memorization is overrated. Cognitive load theory, certain inquiry based learning principles, good notetaking and practice/revision gives you a much sturdier memory with much less overhead (i.e., managing mnemonics systems/thousands of flashcards)

I think both have their purposes. The fact that the mnemonic system has done so well in speed memorization competitions shows it's useful.

I hope to try implementing it over the summer. I think most of the overhead is gone once you've set it up. Similarly, there's no overhead once you've written the flashcards; you just have to use them.

>> No.22100013

Speed memorization competitions aren't real circumstances, though. Though, I do think that a mnemonics/flashcard based workflow is probably enough for most people.

What does it mean if my episodic memory sucks but my semantic memory is great? I have a hard time implementing most memory techniques for that reason. BTW, I can visualize and rotate objects just fine, but my recollection of experiences tends to be awful—stripped down, lacking in detail.

I know this and that about cognitive load, memory, neuropsychology, so don't think I'm an expert.

If you think it's an issue, to a doctor. You are experiencing something called schema flattening - a concept in schema theory where information that is similar to things you already know is emphasized, while information that is dissimilar is discarded or, well, "stripped down." We remember things that are relevant, especially to our own survival or to a problem we are trying to solve.

Do you need great episodic memory? I asked myself the same thing, and I realized that aside from logging 3 major events each day and what I can improve on in my journal, I don't really need to remember mundane details like what I had for lunch.

That’s brilliant and that sounds exactly like what’s going on. I often find that I can be oblivious to things I’m not actively looking for unless I can put myself in the mindset to be receptive to all things as much as I can.
>Do you need great episodic memory? I asked myself the same thing, and I realized that aside from logging 3 major events each day and what I can improve on in my journal, I don't really need to remember mundane details like what I had for lunch.
I don’t “need” to, but I’d rather live life without a paucity of experience. Plus, I find that it’s easier to maintain accountability when I know the details.

>> No.22100071

>>22100055

Yes, I understand - a friend of mine responded similarly. Have you considered practicing mindfulness and meditation? They're both about focusing as much as you can on the current experience, which might improve your memory. Otherwise, I recommend keeping a journal. Asking yourself a few basic questions about your day and writing it down is a good way to increase your awareness of events.

>> No.22100094

I have, and maybe it’s time to get back into the practice of it. I think I also have to think about both improving and not relying on my focus—I can be a bit of a one track mind but not always at the right time nor with the right intensity. If I’m not looking for it, it simply isn’t “there” oftentimes. Plus, I think I’ve neglected some emotional numbness and a lack of spontaneous artistic expression for too long. Schema flattening was exactly the right label, thank you anon.

This is nice. I also wanna throw in a suggestion. Bowling Alone for Social Skills. It's not so much a self-help guide for skills, but more of an observation of just how important social capital is. As someone who is pretty anti-social, I found it eye-opening to just how important networking and socialization is for your general success in life AND your health. For example, people who join and engage in some kind of social group activity cut their chance of dying down by half. I used to think my introvert attitude at least had some kind of cool 'lone wolf' mystique behind it, but in the context of "social capital", I was basically taking pride in the fact I was homeless and living under the bridge. The other books might tell you how to improve social skills, but I think this is a good book for why you should improve social skills. You NEED social capital in order to succeed.

No one will ever use this chart, except for someone who is obsessed with the Presocs. There is practically just zero point. Also it seems it will be incredibly repetitive.

can anyone speak on the books about women? Im willing to try it but everytime I open myself to relationship advice from anyone or anything its usually lies or some meme other men give each other then I go outside and I see how not true these notions are or at least exaggerated.

its a great book tha goes over basics that you probably know but is a great refresher and can give you new perspectives to approach things and understanding them. Even comes with a list of suggested books at the end. I say get it to keep yourself a good reader, in our world today it can be easy to fall into a lot for bad habits.

> Es bastante aburrido y las partes de "magia" terminaban siendo eventos aislados que pocas veces afectaban la trama (y paradójicamente aquellos episodios fantásticos hubiera querido que ocurrieran más a menudo).
eso es porque es realismo mágico, no fantasía.

Does anyone have a recommended reading chart for the early medieval period? Trying to keep going after Greeks, Romans and Late Antiquity but I have a hard time finding the essentials of that period.
