Early Nietzsche was extremely influenced by Schopenhauer and took many of his assertions for granted. In his introduction to The Birth of Tragedy (written many years after the original publication) in which Nietzsche criticized the work, he explicitly faults it for being too influenced by Schopenhauer, he if you read the work you will see it presumes you have read The World as Will and Representation. The term “life-denying” is originally Schopenhauer’s, it is intended as positive. Nietzsche initially approached Schopenhauer and tried to reevaluate him by turning his values on their head: instead of life-denial, now life-affirming and embracing the Will. Nietzsche would use this as a starting point that he would build on later, with his conception of the Will the same as Schopenhauer’s until he matured as a philosopher more

Schopenhauer was also an atheist (The Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason is, as much as anything else, an argument against the prime mover) and his major criticism of Hegel is that the latter has corrupted philosophy to serve Christianity in exchange for state support. Schopenhauer likes Christianity but hates Islam, whereas Nietzsche likes Islam but hates Christianity; neither of these positions by either should be taken as a statement of belief in God, but rather reflections of their values systems of life-denying vs life-affirming
