Rodney Merrill's translation is the best I can find for Homer, his Odyssey is extremely faithful to the text and he translated it into English dactylic hexameter; Merrill's philosophy here is that Homer was meant to be sung and therefore needs very much to be translated as lyrics which are roughly analogous in order to capture the emotional momentum being conveyed. You really appreciate how Homer was a genius of a poet with this translation which captures at least an echo of the Greek. To me it is the definitive translation.

Merrill may be interesting for comparative reasons but he's not at all an authoritative translation. Lattimore's translation approaches Homer's hexameter while still being great poetry, and trying to capture the spirit, and not just an absolute technique, of Homer. Just look what Fitzgerald, considered the favourite translator by many, has to say about it:

Lattimore would be my second choice as he is the only consistently faithful verse translators besides Merrill when it comes to Greek, Rodney Merrill translated a few works but Lattimore did many more and he is my go-to when available, I only choose Rodney because he is much better at capturing the flow of poetry, but Lattimore's Hesiod and Pindar are particularly impressive.

Merrill is 100% as faithful as Lattimore so I don't know what you mean by authoritative. Lattimore is much more widely used in schools mainly because he is the first verse translator who didn't play with the translation and that made him the established standard. But there is no doubt Merrill is equally scrupulous about fidelity, but his verse is much better

Wilson is based. Her goal was to translate it into iambic pentameter with a focus on the rhythm and musicality of the language. Her translation is no less faithful literally than Pope's. On top of all of this, she has scolded the media for representing her as a feminist translator and insists on not being labeled as a "women classicist."

Fitzgerald shits over all the other modern verse translations. I don't care how faithful it is to the original Greek. The very first line tells all. Wilson and Lattimore begin with "tell me muse" (BORING!). Fagles is a bit more poetic with "sing to me" but is still no match for Fitzgerald's epic "sing IN me muse" where the poet becomes a vessel for the muse to breathe divine words through.
