It's a great book. I loved books about runaways and orphans when I was a kid, which is why they bought it for me. In the book, reading about families being kind to Bud and giving him food gave me the false notion that if I were to ever run away from home for a while that strangers would happily take care of me. I discovered that wasn't true when I tried to spend a couple weeks on the road when I was in high school.

Oh come the fuck on. That's not fair at all. The old man is not trying to isolate the kid or convince him to hide things from the outside world. The Giver would enlighten the normies in a heartbeat if they wanted it, but the whole society is based around helping people hide from unpleasant realities. It's the authorities who created the situation in the first place.

A groomer version would be a society of straight people forcing a kid who looks kind of gay to get fucked by an old man so he can be homosexual on their behalf.
