I don't understand how The King in Yellow got its reputation. The first story reads like a Futurama episode.

I think it's just through Lovecraft's shiling. It's got some neat ideas, and the excerpts from the play are sufficiently creepy, but there's just not much to it.

I like these threads except they're always ruined by those anons who post 10 renditions of some sci-fi or medieval fantasy garbage or some esoteric shit.

No one knows or cares about your LOTR in space bullshit, so there's zero need to make a WIR,WIE, WIG meme for it.

I read the first story recently because I heard that Lovecraft took some ideas from it. I'm honestly struggling to understand what he saw in it, aside from, I guess, the idea of reading a manuscript so spooky that it makes the reader mad. Actual garbage story, and the prose isn't nearly good enough to make it worthwhile. Are the others any better?

how? You realize that the narrator is mentally insane right?

Genuinely one of the lamest books I've ever read. The first four stories are serviceable at best and the rest of it doesn't even bear mentioning with the exception of The Prophets' Paradise, which is the best thing in there.

Did you read the book?
Far too much of it was focused on promiscuous sex, and a church founded to promote said sex.
What a letdown.
