You're going about it the wrong way, it is war. Either desire subjugates you or you subjugate your desiring parts. Read Jihad al akbar by Khomeini, it refers to the war of the soul.

But what if I desire to cut my testes off and it gives me pleasure?
Would i not be engaged in self contradiction?

the key to freedom from desire is to cultivate a rational and objective understanding of the world and to focus on what is within our control, rather than on external events and circumstances.

You get rid of your other desires first, and then that desire will disappear on its own.

To be free from desire and attachment is Nirvana, a word that etymologically refers to being "extinguished" or "blown out".

i don't speak greek but this is nonsense, because that saying is founded on desire : the very one against the desire itself, the desire to jeopardize desire is still a desire, not an eristic myself but this is absolutely true and no amount of circumvoluion will change this coherentist statement.

>> No.21658886

This is just first paragraph of Nicomachean Ethics stuff. The point isn't to eliminate desire. It's to be able to compare desires and pursue the more important one. You have desired ends. To realize ends you must take action. To pursue one end, you must forgo pursuing many others. If you can consciously say "I want to lose weight, but also want to eat that chocolate bar, but losing weight is the greater end, so I won't eat the chocolate" you've created a hierarchy of desired ends. Being able to act according to that hierarchy necessarily requires weighing those ends. Thus it's the mark of a reasonable man

Unironically this.

What helped was to really ponder :
How would my life overall be different if I focused on this desire ?
Would it make a difference on my death bed were I to indulge in numerous drugs, promiscuous sex, or excessive drinking ?
I think it would not. I think life is measure in terms of experiences, virtues and what you bring to the world. So what doesn't help these, I throw it out.

I still have sugar cravings though, but knowing this might be the only place I could eat good food, I indulge in it sometimes. Oh well.
