I'm seeking chart(s) on world history up to the Greeks. What humans were up to before recorded history, basically. Stone age/neolithic/hunter-gatherer stuff.

I got 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond and it's a start, but not quite what I'm looking for (Diamond seems a bit too sorry about his being a white guy) and Harari's Sapiens is a last resort. Thanks in advance.

that would be appreciated. i'm roughly basing my order on what i found on reddit (it was all i could find) https://www.reddit.com/r/askphilosophy/comments/5q53pv/comment/dcx3qnl/

this is my tentative reading order:
>Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis
>On Dreams
>Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (i have the first edition, before he shoehorned the Oedipal theories; it's the Verso text, if you're interested)
>The Interpretation of Dreams (this one is also an early edition, so it doesn't come with all the weighty additions Freud added over the years)
>The Freud Reader (an anthology i found recommended a few times)
>The Unconscious
>Three Case Histories
>Beyond the Pleasure Principle
>Totem and Taboo

i'm missing works like Civilization because i wasn't able to find them physically. got them for some decent prices as used books in good condition.

Man and his Symbols is proto-selfhelp midwit shit. It is a collection of essays, only one of which was written by Jung, that beat around the bush and spiral all over the place without ever making any specific points or teaching any of the meat of Jungian psychology. It has 0 value for anyone trying to get into Jung, you'd know this if you actually read it. Putting it as step three of a chart on Jung basically tells me the person that compiled it doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about.

I don't often read self-improvement books but I found pic related to be good. The book details how basically anything can be learned and mastered through deliberate practice and stresses that learning skills is not contingent on the time spent learning (like the popularized 20,000 hours rule of mastering a skill) but rather the quality of training. The author I believe is a psychologist and he explains how he was able to teach one of his students number memorization to demonstrate the effectiveness of deliberate practice. His student could eventually repeat hundreds of random numbers from memory. I admit I ultimately didn't retain much more than that from the book, just the basic theme that repeated quality practice = success. The book goes into better detail and dispels many prejudices people have towards learning and 'talent'

hmm. I'd mostly agree with this, but I'd say read New Introductory Lectures directly after Introductory Lectures. freud's odd because once you have those two under your belt you can read the rest in essentially any order you choose. some works are cultural critique, some expand on sexuality, some are writings about art and artists, etc. I would add the papers On The Dynamic of Transference, Mourning and Melancholia, and Why War?; The Freud Reader's excellent for a good selection of the papers but you'll have read good chunks of it prior if you stick to that reading order. throw in The Ego and The Id somewhere in there too. my personal order would look something like
>Introductory Lectures
>New Introductory Lectures
>The Interpretation of Dreams
>Three Essays On The Theory of Sexuality
>The Ego and The Id
then whatever papers you want after that. pleasure principle, melancholia, moses and monotheism, etc

Atlas Shrugged is as anti-socialist as it gets, and Infinite Jest has heavy anti-capitalist themes. The Stand isn't particularly anarchist, nor is the Silmarillion particularly fascist, but they aren't as diametrically opposite as Infinite Jest and Atlas Shrugged. Dune is the only one I'd agree with, given the primary struggle of the protagonist is to overcome his privileged upbringing and gain acceptance among a warrior race.

>the stand isn't anarchist
post apocalyptic wasteland, idk what form of society you think could exist in that setting besides anarchy.
>Atlas Shrugged is anti-socialist
Still has managed to trick a generation of libertarian boomers into thinking Gault's gulch was capitalism perfected rather than what it actually is which is an American commune.
>Infinite Jest has anti-capitalist themes
you might not think the year of the Wonderchicken is a good idea but that doesn't mean it is anti-capitalist, it just is capitalist and you probably might have missed how making it to the show is as hollow and opportunistic as anything else.
>The Silmarillion isn't particularly fascist
I put Rings Lord in there not the Silmarillion, I would probably agree the Silmarillion isn't fascist, pretty sure it's mostly world building stuff.
The inscription on the One Ring is simply the thesis for fascism,
Tolkien having been a Lieutenant fighting against the Nazis it would make sense he would be compelled to write a book that exposes all of the forms of fascism and reasons why one would become a fascist.
I'm fairly sure that has been accomplished even if I err in assuming his intent.

>>21607464
Nepotism is still a form of merit, I doubt you would say Mozart or Bach are hacks simply because they come from established musical families.

>> No.21607543

>>21607478
eh I don't like my explanation for rings lord, the actual continuation from "thesis for fascism" should be that the powers granted by the ring are equivalent to the powers of a fascist dictator.
The invisibility shields the user from accountability and the ability to have control over others is plainly dictatorial.
The ethnically homogenous societies, while typical of fantasy genre stuff for simplicity's sake is also typical of fascist governments as a method for strengthening the bands that (in darkness) bind them together and make them strong.
There's just a lot of stuff and I find it particularly hilarious that I don't see many people talking about how Rings Lord is an encyclopedic exposition of fascism, instead it's just "oh man walking is scary" or "this world is so so comprehensive".

>> No.21607738

Ok, you are making that argument, well first that's dumb, but also how is that an encyclopedic explain of merit? It's all just dukes and emperors and their children dicking each other around. Is john Zerzan worth the time? I want to get a good and more realistic eco philosophical way of thinking. Obviously becoming caveman is not the right way to solve environmental issue in the world. Perhaps just limit the usage of tech to what is necessary.

thanks anon. i'll be taking up Freud after Nietzsche, and then some cursory texts on Jung after that. do you... see things any differently post-Freud? for lack of a better term, i'm curious to know what 'effects' Freudian thought might have on someone.

>a society preoccupied with taking a drug that expands personal ability.
One other more "real" place I know where that happens is in high level athletics.
Are sports where people take performance enhancing drugs to remain competitive the opposite of meritocracy?
I generally think athletes are generally the preeminent examples for the power of raw merit even if they are optimizing their biology.

You placed a very low bar thinking it could possibly be a challenge to think of examples for meritocracy in a book I am claiming it is uniquely capable of doing.
As if this was a game of poker where I was bluffing and either accidentally just picked a random book and guessed based on nothing but the title or that I possibly heard it from someone else that it was a meritocracy.

the text for the name box should not be written in the text box for replies.
Just a helpful tip, I know this site can be confusing at times.
Particularly for people who find books longer than 250 words exhausting.

I'm reading Name of the Rose and it's pretty neat. Now I'd like some books to help me further understand the history of Christian thought, especially monasteries and various "heretical" groups, like the Waldensians, Bogomils, Cathars, and more obscure groups, from the beginning of Christianity up to the modern period.
Is there a chart for this stuff?
I'm not asking as a religious person or someone looking to be converted, but as a historyfag who just wants to know more about this stuff.

Because almost every corporate ideology tends to commodify women as a thing to own.

And it turns men into emotionally frustrated workers.
