>Neddal Ayad: Have you ever written anything that you consider too dark or too heavy to publish?

>Thomas Ligotti: No, but I’ve conceived of stories that were just too disturbing for me to write. If you can write something, then it’s only so disturbing. Anything truly disturbing can’t even be written. Even if it could, no one could stand to read it. And writing is essentially a means of entertainment for both the writer and the reader. I don’t care who the writer is — literature is entertainment or it is nothing. Some readers would object and point to someone like Lautréamont’s Les Chants de Maldoror affiliate link. If they want to see it that way, it’s fine with me. Who am I deny someone their demonic heroes? No one has that much credibility in the history of humanity, nor ever will.

Citing Ligotti in your argument that literature needs to be entertaining is wild because he is one of the most boring and unimpressive cult authors alive.

Just when I didn't think I could love this man more.

He's 100% correct and this enrages 90% of the pseudo-intellectual morons posting ''What did I think of it'' and ''Look at my shelf it has philosophy on it".

No one gives a shit.

You seem to think DFW would disagree with this when in fact he probably wouldn't.
But there is something to be said about these meaningless quotes about what is entertainment and what isn't.
Just because the message has a medium doesn't mean the medium is the message. In the same vein that literature can be entertaining doesn't mean that it is entertainment.
I don't think Ligotti has much to say about either art or entertainment even though he comes across as such a shallow minded person enough for his work inspires pop philosophers and television shows.
But shutting down the question for the distinction between the two is moronic, at best.

Fair enough. I'm no great fan of his, but yeah, we read fiction in our free time, because we want to. Writers know that, even if the thing they're writing is a modernist puzzle, that's a sort of entertainment too

Anything that isn't about survival or gaining resources for survival could be considered entertainment and in that case reading and writing fall under the entertainment category. But I suspect that entertainment means more than what you think it means.

That's not literature. Nonetheless that isn't a "non-fiction" book either
