I don't exactly use a self insert but I used my anxieties and insecurities to try and make my novel's main characters more realistic.
>main guy is miserably shy, particularly around women, can't stand up for himself even when he's being completely shit on, harbors a crush on the female lead for years. He gradually learns courage and the strength to believe in himself, to believe he is worthy enough to ask out his crush
