I dreamt with my dead girlfriend last night.
What are some books about being haunted by the ghosts of the past?

Marx and Darwin refuted the notion of ghosts and proved qualia arises from material, I. E. brain matter and its impulses. Your girlfriend is not haunting you. You are consolidating memories and without such dreams you would in fact slowly forget she ever existed. If I delivered an electric shock to your temporal lobes and induced a grand mal seizure, you wouldn't have any recollection of the dream if administered in the correct time window.

I hate when I am aware that the person is supposed to be dead.

One time I had such a vivid dream it was like I had gone back and time and saw it again. And it was a really unremarkable memory within the dream. Just our living room, floor model tv and floral couch etc, and he came around the corner from the kitchen and sat on the couch, and he looked really sad.

A man grieving for a dead woman is quite a common trope. I can't think of any good examples with the sexes reversed. (Let me know if you find one.)

That's true. She was coming to my city from her college town to see me.
I know that you're just trolling me, trying to make me feel responsible for her death. I don't. I just miss her dearly.
And thanks for the rec

I occasionally have dreams where my pet cat (who got hit by a car when I was 9) comes back. I think it's because she went missing for a few days before we heard she died, and even when we buried her I never got to see her. My subconscious still thinks she's coming back.

As for OP, I'm very sorry for your loss. It doesn't get better, but we can learn to live with it. I wish you the best.
