>I've often thought that there isn't any "I" at all; that we are simply the means of expression of something else; that when we think we are ourselves, we are simply the victims of a delusion.

It's true, but Pessoa say it better.

Classic Satanist pseudery, removed himself so far from himself, any pretence of values, etc. he's left open to these type of pseudo-philosophical explanations of reality. Doesn't want personal responsibility, least of all in what he believes.

Time to reheat the Jeets.

Who is the I who isn't thinking this?

Read his Book of Disquiet, it's full of reflections on this subject. His refusal to accept a single, static identity led him to create a whole bunch of "heteronyms" and the results are beautiful as well as insightful.

You can read it like a collection of aphorisms - opening the book at random - or try to construct a traditional narrative, but the point is any throughline will be the reader's invention.

I'll definitely have a look! I really like the quote OP posted as it resonates with a thought I've had, but I'm not yet able to fully verbalize it. It has in some way been artistically portrayed by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

Yes, Bateman is an aspect of this sort of "unself"-awareness, but it takes many forms. Pessoa managed to shape Portuguese forevermore literature with his.

Irony is that Pessoa himself read Crowley and even helped him to fake his death in Portugal.

That's one way to admit you're a hylic.
