It's the only podcast I listen to
I was listening to an episode on Sappho recently and I had to turn it off because Melvin got into an argument with his guests about whether Sappho was expressing her own personal feelings or not or whether she was just expressing common poetic themes
I've started listening to the Science episodes and some of them are pretty good

Fall of Civilizations

The bong who makes it is probably a lefty fag but he's very good about keeping the whole thing comfy despite it being about destruction, death, and doom. His narrating voice is agreeable and he doesn't approach the subject matter with edginess and 'splosions like a lot of other history podcasts and shows.

>Mike Duncan

I remember how funny it was watching Duncan change his political positions as he learned about history

>Starts as a left-wing liberal (he's from Seattle so duh)
>Abandons liberalism after reading about Haiti
>Moves towards socialism while covering 1848 and the Mexican Revolution
>Abandons socialism after reading about the SRs and Bolsheviks, briefly embraces anarchism
>Abandons anarchism after reading about Nestor Makhno and the Black Army
>His only consistent belief throughout all this is that antisemitism is bad
>Can't give a consistent definition of when violence is OK and when it isn't

History can break your brain if you're not careful or have strong convictions (which IMHO most Americans are incapable of)

This one is really good, he's been doing it for a decade and has just gotten to Peter Ramus. Adamson's main thing is philosophy in the Islamic World, so it's a great place to get introduced to that area. The last time I linked it some anon sperged because he had a separate African philosophy podcast, but I'd rather have that then have him pretend that sub saharans were influencing medieval thinkers.

Critical readings
Two conservative catholic English professors discuss poetry. In their series
on Paradise Lost they say they agree with Milton that ancient pagan gods were actually demons and compare human sacrifice rituals to abortion. So they're pretty conservative. They have also done series on The Faerie Queene, The Canterbury Tales, and Tennyson's Idylls of the King.

Literature and History is still going. It's just a bit slow right now. I bought all his bonus content and it was all worth it except for the rad greek myths series which I didn't like.
>>21010096
I've listened to this up until a little bit after augustine (skipped the islamics) and then I stopped because I got bored. I didn't really care to hear about the umpteenth philosophers slightly tweaked take on christology.
My favorite philosophy podcasts are Philosophy Bites, Philosophy 24/7 and Social Science Bites which are just a series of interviews.
>>21010229
I've listened to a bit of this. It's half interesting and half comedy when the guest spits out some random schizobabble and the host goes "... mmmm wow". I can't take continental philosophy seriously.

Its not really podcasts but rather livestreams. Even though he can be a bit of a millenial at times he's more interesting to listen to than the vast majority of literature/philosophy people on the internet. He's very funny and unpretensious but also seems to have a good grasp of philosophy

Declining in what sense? The main limitation I've seen is that they tend to circle around the same few ideas over and over again, without any new insights. So to use one of their overused metaphors, they need to turn the circle into a spiral so they can shift into something new.
The main reason I listen to it now is not for ideas but for exposure to writers I otherwise wouldn't bother with - Joy Williams and John M. Harrison are two that spring to mind, both are great and I wouldn't have read them without WS.
It's also comfy, as you say.

When you are older you might get a job that requires you to commute, or you might start doing some DIY in your own house, or you might start doing something about that obesity by doing some exercise.
In any of those circumstances, you might at times wish to listen to something that at worst entertains and at best expands your frame of reference and influence.

Does anyone here actually learn useful things from podcasts? In my experience, listening to podcasts makes me feel productive because it’s edutainment but I usually don’t recall much from them, especially when I’m multitasking with something else. I’m thinking it’s just better to enjoy music or even silence because constant stimulation is bad.
