In order to gain an understanding of modern Jewish philosophy (not philosphers who are themselves Jewish), where should I start?

I have no familiarity with this area at all and am not myself Jewish.

Buber is borderline mysticism, Levinas tries hard to present the same sentiment as a rigorous philosophical system, Derrida is a more nuanced synthesis of those two. Also, Jankelevitch is nice to read if you are interested in the problem of forgiveness.

You have to learn about Franz Rosenzweig definitely. If you learn about him and maybe read Beiser's biography of Hermann Cohen as well, you will learn a lot about Jewish post-Enlightenment thought and identity, which are deeply intertwined because so much of Jewish identity revolves around abstract thought and self-consciousness.

A lot of things Jewish are downstream of Cohen's peculiar neo-Kantianism, like Cassirer, Buber, Rosenzweig, Scholem. Through Cohen you'll also be able to see the beginnings of modern Jewish self-consciousness, after Napoleon's emancipation, trying to come to terms with that an Jewish identity could mean.

If you want something easier to jump into right away, try skimming through the individually short essays in Scholem's On Jews and Judaism in Crisis: Selected Essays, and On the Possibility of Jewish Mysticism in Our Time. He was someone who grappled directly and sensitively with the meaning of Judaism in the 20th century, and straddled several potential forms of Jewish identity (settler Israeli, mystic as opposed to rationalist, also sensitive to the dangers of grounding Judaism in mystic "irrationalism," AND also sensitive to the dangers of grounding it in experientialist/fideist religiosity instead of the credal or dialectical religiosity of the rabbinical tradition). There's a short book, God Interrupted, that also touches on many of these things.

Also highly recommend Raul Hilberg's autobiography, which is short and idiosyncratic. There's another high intellectual Jew whose entire life was lived in diligent service to Jewishness, prior to a set definition of what that means, yet he was himself at odds with many forms of modern Jewish identity and often shunned by mainstream Jews.

anyway this is my perspective

talmud and torah teaches jews that yahweh (jew god) can jews souls, but only to jews, the jews are the chosen ones who received souls on mount sinai
jew god put the nonjews on this earth for the same reason he put cattle on this earth, to feed the jew, hence why the word for nonjews is the same as the word for cattle, goyim

growing up with these teachings, that jews are special/chosen ones and that they cant commit a crime against goyim, they proceed to lie, steal, murder and ultimately get kicked out of 300 nations through out history
back in babylon where they spoke 7 trillion languages, jew worked as a translator, jewing the translations in his benefit until getting expelled from there
in rome, christ called them 'money changers' and kicked them out of temples because all they did was exchange counterfeit coins
one of the reasons spanish inquisition even got formed was to expel loan sharking jews from there
nomadic cossack war tribes of eastern europe werent some big empires of wealth.. but even there jew managed to get pogrom'd or expelled for trading watered down vodka
famous organized crime and prohibition days of the united states, jewish hollywood makes movies about this era constantly portraying some imaginary "italian mafia"... well half of these gangsters escaped justice and extradition by fleeing to israel

this is jewish ideology, according to me
a homeless tribe, teaching itself that because they are homeless, thieving and stealing is perfectly fine, so when a jew hits your shore, he is never a soldier or a farmer, he is always a banker or lawyer or politician

Recently read a great compilation of all Hannah Arendt's work on Judiasm - published as The Jewish Writings - highly reccomend. If not that, the first section of The Origins of Totalitarianism, on anti-semitism, despite being the least discussed are some of the most interesting, especially the stuff on the Jewish relation to European state formation. Imo it's essential to understand her pariah/parvenu distinction in order to grapple seriously with the Jewish people's place in European history.

Her writings me interested in Gershom Scholem, who she corresponded with, but who I haven't read. I found this discussion of his ideas fascinating, particularly his charecterisation of contemporary settlers in West Bank as modern day Sabbateans : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmLisxZZWUw
