Why does /lit/ hate Martin? Is it because he's popular? Martin for all his faults wrote a never-finished series that is at least compelling, feels grounded, and doesn't lean heavily on its magical aspects, focusing instead on actually interesting narratives and novel situations as they come up fairly organically and letting them resolve dynamically with actual stakes. The same strengths lead to him being unable to finish, but he gave us 3 excellent novels in the meantime.

he's a bit smug. also the fact that people call him the American Tolkein, when he's never written anything that's touched Tolkein's achievements. Yeah, he's written some very compelling fantasy books but his series is unfinished and there is so much filler in the fourth and fifth books it's hard to believe it will have a satisfying ending. also /lit/ isn't a monolith. even in this one thread there are plenty of people not hating him. although it's easy to get replies by generalizing /lit/ as one person... it's just inaccurate.

because he makes the classic mistake of thinking a grim, depressing, and overall gross setting = a realistic setting. just because a character says the word "fuck" and assassinates and/or have sex with one of their cousins does not make the story an accurate representation of mediaeval politics (or make the story compelling for that matter). it has to have a lot more depth than that for it to be labeled as realistic or simply just good.

Byzantine politics were pretty fucking brutal my friend. You clearly don't know what you are talking about since he steals a lot of historical violence to write his books.

>Black Dinner: In 1440, the 16-year-old William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas, and his younger brother were invited to dine with the ten-year-old King James II of Scotland.[4] Later called the Black Dinner, the occasion was organised by the Lord Chancellor, Sir William Crichton, and James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas who inherited the young earl's wealth and titles.[18] While they ate, a black bull's head, a symbol of death, was brought in and placed before the Earl.[4] Over the protests of the young King James II, the two brothers were then dragged out to Castle Hill, given a mock trial and beheaded.[

you misunderstood, i didn't mean that that stuff didn't happen, i meant that that stuff wasn't the only things that happened. of course you had the executions and incest and all that juicy stuff, but that wasn't the whole of mediaeval politics. there was a lot more going under the hood, like legal theories that were developed that interfered with how government functioned, important theological questions that bleed into the realm of secular governance, all sorts of symbolism being utilized as propaganda, and a great amount of differing opinions between nobles and kings about the rights and privileges of each other.

“Ser? My lady?” said Podrick. “Is a broken man an outlaw?”

“More or less,” Brienne answered.

Septon Meribald disagreed. “More less than more. There are many sorts of outlaws, just as there are many sorts of birds. A sandpiper and a sea eagle both have wings, but they are not the same. The singers love to sing of good men forced to go outside the law to fight some wicked lord, but most outlaws are more like this ravening Hound than they are the lightning lord. They are evil men, driven by greed, soured by malice, despising the gods and caring only for themselves. Broken men are more deserving of our pity, though they may be just as dangerous. Almost all are common-born, simple folk who had never been more than a mile from the house where they were born until the day some lord came round to take them off to war. Poorly shod and poorly clad, they march away beneath his banners, ofttimes with no better arms than a sickle or a sharpened hoe, or a maul they made themselves by lashing a stone to a stick with strips of hide. Brothers march with brothers, sons with fathers, friends with friends. They’ve heard the songs and stories, so they go off with eager hearts, dreaming of the wonders they will see, of the wealth and glory they will win. War seems a fine adventure, the greatest most of them will ever know.

“Then they get a taste of battle.

“For some, that one taste is enough to break them. Others go on for years, until they lose count of all the battles they have fought in, but even a man who has survived a hundred fights can break in his hundred-and-first. Brothers watch their brothers die, fathers lose their sons, friends see their friends trying to hold their entrails in after they’ve been gutted by an axe.

“They see the lord who led them there cut down, and some other lord shouts that they are his now. They take a wound, and when that’s still half-healed they take another. There is never enough to eat, their shoes fall to pieces from the marching, their clothes are torn and rotting, and half of them are shitting in their breeches from drinking bad water. (1/2)

>> No.20625389

>>20625383

“If they want new boots or a warmer cloak or maybe a rusted iron halfhelm, they need to take them from a corpse, and before long they are stealing from the living too, from the smallfolk whose lands they’re fighting in, men very like the men they used to be. They slaughter their sheep and steal their chickens, and from there it’s just a short step to carrying off their daughters too. And one day they look around and realize all their friends and kin are gone, that they are fighting beside strangers beneath a banner that they hardly recognize. They don’t know where they are or how to get back home and the lord they’re fighting for does not know their names, yet here he comes, shouting for them to form up, to make a line with their spears and scythes and sharpened hoes, to stand their ground. And the knights come down on them, faceless men clad all in steel, and the iron thunder of their charge seems to fill the world…

“And the man breaks.

“He turns and runs, or crawls off afterward over the corpses of the slain, or steals away in the black of night, and he finds someplace to hide. All thought of home is gone by then, and kings and lords and gods mean less to him than a haunch of spoiled meat that will let him live another day, or a skin of bad wine that might drown his fear for a few hours. The broken man lives from day to day, from meal to meal, more beast than man. Lady Brienne is not wrong. In times like these, the traveler must beware of broken men, and fear them…but he should pity them as well.” (2/2)

Now if any Tolkienfag can find me an excerpt from his work better than this I’d be glad to read it

After a while the king led his men away somewhat eastward, to come between the fires of the siege and the outer fields. Still they were unchallenged, and still Théoden gave no signal.... A smell of burning was in the air and a very shadow of death. The horses were uneasy. But the king sat upon Snowmane, motionless, gazing upon the agony of Minas Tirith, as if stricken suddenly by anguish, or by dread. He seemed to shrink down, cowed by age. Merry himself felt as if a great weight of horror and doubt had settled on him.... They were too late! Too late was worse than never!....

Then suddenly Merry felt it at last, beyond doubt: a change. Wind was in his face! Light was glimmering...

But at that same moment there was a flash, as if lightning had sprung from the earth beneath the City. For a searing second it stood dazzling far off in black and white, its topmost tower like a glittering needle: and then as the darkness closed again there came rolling over the fields a great boom.

At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before:

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!
Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.

Yeah. Nobody in my private jr high was fucking at that age; many Asian parents and rich white families. That was for the poors in the public schools, we all chittered about them supposedly having orgies on the floors of the classroom or something. Note the "poors" in this case were upper middle class white Americans. No matter where you live, private schools are the place parents who care about having higher standards send their kids, even if that's one of the richest zip codes. It's pay to win social gaming.
There might have been some innocent experimenting going on at the time, very closeted, but actual coital sex was non-existent. Actually, intersexual dating was also mostly non-existent until 14 or 15, and then stuff like "go to the movies and maybe kiss".
High school was where the pants flew off.
This was before internet porn existed more or less. I am guessing kids nowadays are doing ATM at 9 or something, though Asian parents likely still care more about this than white ones.

For a trad society take, my wife came from a typical agrarian 3rd world place, and she said this no fucking/dating thing extended most of the way through high school there (it's changing rapidly now due to urbanization and Americanization of culture).
In societies where fucking = unwanted children = unwanted marriage, people don't fuck much. And in societies where virtue and morals and shame and such are held high, like most traditional societies, inter-gender relations tend to be very dampened compared to even pre-internet US norms. Making mistakes can get you disowned and ostracized, consigned to a life of extreme poverty. People don't fuck around with those stakes. Coomerism isn't worth it when the price is your lifelong honor or worse.

There's exceptions, so an author shouldn't feel required to follow that mold, but I do not think "anything goes, let's fuck like monkeys" was considered normal until the 1960s in the US, and even then it took a while for it to transform into fuckapalooza today. The Puritans in the 1800s certainly weren't having it.

George R.R. Martin is a quality author and a really nice guy, he's very well-respected by other writers. Look up him talking with Stephen King and you'll see, he's kind of like a based high schooler.

>>20624082
Rothfuss is a little bit of a cringelord but his books are very fucking good imo and don't deserve all the shit they catch. The prose is masterfully worked and the worldbuilding, pacing and characterisation is seamless and very compelling. If you like fantasy and you don't like the KKC there's something wrong with you.

of course not, but Martin has made the claim of depicting realistic mediaeval politics in these books, and throughout they mostly just contain only the more superficial aspects. now if he hadn't made these sorts of claims, i'd imagine most people wouldn't come-down as hard on him as they do (myself included). after all these are decent books, if a little reliant on shock value, and aren't entirely without merit. the real problem originates with Martin himself trying to make them (and by extension, himself) look more high-browed than they actually are.

>> No.20629138

>>20629113
Literarily speaking, for a fantasy series ASOIAF is quite high-brow. Tonally speaking, it's very gritty. I don't see how you think Martin misses either of these marks.

I also think Mary Stewart is quite a bit better.

There are many better and even more worse.

Claiming that he has nothing to offer is obviously not true. Millions of people were drawn to and fascinated by his stories. That must count for something, unless you're the only one who counts.

80-90% of the content takes place in more or less a standard medieval kingdom revolving around political squabbles.

This is Martin's actual approximate progress on Winds if you pay attention and compare what he says in interviews. The first 375~ pages (200 complete, 175 manuscript/rough draft) were leftovers he cut from Dance. Putting aside the 100~ pages he MAYBE completed around 2015, the dude literally did ZERO work on the book until the coof locked him in his home.
He just kept saying in many different words that he was about a quarter of the way done Winds for half a decade, even though that only accounts for stuff we already know was cut from Dance. He gave the illusion of progress, though I'm not convinced it was intentional deceit.
He reminds me of myself working on a late uni assignment, people ask me if I've made progress and I overestimate by a page or two because although I slacked off and did nothing last night, I'm SURELY going to get lots of work hammered out tonight, right? Then a week later I'm still not at the point I initially estimated I was at.

I will always love George. I think we've all had an experience where we found ourselves in a dark place, but then discovered that getting lost in the world of a good book truly helped us survive our own darkness and ultimately escape our lowest point.
