Yes, but the state in which we find ourselves is directly caused by life in the modern era. If it keeps us on life support, it is out of some misplaced sense of implicit shame in the knowledge that the reason we cannot thrive in these circumstances is due primarily to its own existence, by which many more are thriving.

This. There is good reason to believe that lightly autistic minds would have thrived in prehistoric times. The natural world is a world of pattern. Predators and prey act in knowable, predictable ways. Birds fly south for the winter, deer head to lower elevation, big cats are ambush predators. These things and all the vivid detail of nature could have been very, very valuable to humans in prehistory. That these traits have fallen out of favor does not imply their possessors are faulty. It's just that we have outgrown our biology, and are in the interim stages of really, fully accepting it.
