The destiny of a crop is to be harvested, so if it could hope for anything, it would be that. And consequently, the farmer harvesting the crop is caring for it by giving it what it wants, as much as he was caring for it by planting it and helping it grow.
It's a very benign metaphor. If he'd made it about cattle it would hit harder.
