Been wanting to reread this lately. Taking this thread as a sign that it's time to Gita up. Ta, OP.

Why? What's the point if you don't even read the Mahabharata first.

And most people will get filtered halfway through. So better yet, read the Ramayana, which is about a third of the length of the Mahabharata. And then, read the Mahabharata if you can stick through the entirety of Ramayana.

Then you can read, the Gita and Harivansha.

>Okay, but why?

"When doubts haunt me when disappointments stare me in the face, and I see not one ray of hope on the horizon, I turn to Bhagavad-Gita and find a verse to comfort me; and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. Those who meditate on the Gita will derive fresh joy and new meanings from it every day."
- Mahatma Gandhi

"I owed a magnificent day to the Bhagavad-gita. It was the first of books; it was as if an empire spoke to us, nothing small or unworthy, but large, serene, consistent, the voice of an old intelligence which in another age and climate had pondered and thus disposed of the same questions which exercise us."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"The Bhagavad-Gita is the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of endowing value to mankind. It is one of the most clear and comprehensive summaries of perennial philosophy ever revealed; hence its enduring value is subject not only to India but to all of humanity."
- Aldous Huxley

"From a clear knowledge of the Bhagavad-Gita, all the goals of human existence become fulfilled. Bhagavad-Gita is the manifest quintessence of all the teachings of the Vedic scriptures."
- Adi Shankara

"The marvel of the Bhagavad-Gita is its truly beautiful revelation of life's wisdom which enables philosophy to blossom into religion."
- Herman Hesse

"In the morning I bathe my intellect in the stupendous and cosmogonal philosophy of the Bhagavat Geeta, since whose composition years of the gods have elapsed, and in comparison with which our modern world and its literature seem puny and trivial…"
- Henry David Thoreau

(The Bhagavad Gita is) "The most beautiful, perhaps the only true philosophical song existing in any known tongue ....perhaps the deepest and loftiest thing the world has to show."
- Wilhelm von Humboldt

lmao read the mahabharata

Then you would see that the real justification for the slaughter of countless millions was the near quintuple-cuckolding of Draupadi's husbands by the Kauravas, which was only stopped by Krishna because the latter can do whatever the fuck he wants, including feeding Arjuna a line of celestial bs that he needed to hear to waste Bhishma, Drona, and the other undefeatables in retribution for the near-complete humiliation caused to gambling addict Yuhdhishthira and his brothers.

On the part of the Pandavas and their wife the war was pure revenge and saving face. For Krishna the whole thing was self-interest, incomprehensible to mortals.

If you read the Mahabharata you can skip the Gita.

Order: Ramayana > Mahabharata> Bhagavad > Upanishads
Any recommendations?

People don't understand how a "spiritual" outlook can change your life so much. I agree that starting with philosophy is a meme idea, you can learn so much more about yourself and the world from this instead.
