I'm starting to feel an intense dislike for normal people. The pandemic, the Ukraine war, the Johnny Depp trial, in every example you see (mostly on social media) a kind of stupid, violent mob mentality which feeds on itself and becomes more extreme. The hypocrisy, the emotional intensity, the sentimentality, it is all so repulsive and I'm not saying that from a left/right wing perspective.

Social media, and in the internet in general, seems to have amplified this stupidity and herd behaviour. What's worse is that the real world now just seems like a product of the internet, and people a by-product of it also. It's deeply troubling to me, no joke. Even on a mundane level I find that I talk to people now and sense very malicious, callous or repulsively stupid motives behind what they say, and I am not schizophrenic.

Are there any books about the way society has changed in the past decade or so?

Anything about the effect of advanced technology, social media etc on average human behaviour?

This is seriously making me want to not leave my home ever again, or go and live in a forest.

The gist of the book is kinda hard to understand, but essentially it's this: When the telegraph was invented, typographical culture in America became more focused on creating a sense of oneness than actually educating and informing people. Think of it this way: Mass literacy was aided by technology, but it also made it so people were less intent on understanding the core values of what national newspapers and television broadcasts showed them. In a roundabout sense, patriotism in America was kind of a spook, since a lot of the Protestant values the country was built upon were axed by 20th century technology's propagation and the rise of absolute nonsense like bipartisanship and radio dramas, etc.

Lasch is more about social critique and mass psychology, so his stuff can be kind of impenetrable at first. Whereas Postman is dated and has been refuted or even made obsolete by contemporary work, Lasch has a rewarding approach by blending his values with commentaries on those who came before them, and you'll probably get a lot more out of stuff like Haven in a Heartless World. Remember: the degeneracy you see around you has a common source and there ARE bad actors (and ignorant ones) allowing it to continue.

I feel you, anon. I've never been the kind of guy who'd bitch about the state of the world or society or anything like that; to me, the world just is what it is. I'm not an incel or a misogynist. I don't even have very strong opinions on mainstream politics, besides being something of a contrarian by nature.
But the past two years have been blackpilling beyond belief. The early months of the pandemic felt like a psychological horror version of The Emperor's New Clothes. And it's like the world hasn't been the same since.

I've had to reevaluate pretty much my entire belief system in less than two years. I've become much more and reactionary. I feel a much stronger attachment and duty to my close friends and family and nation, despite many of them being part of the problem. No idea where I'll go from here.
