books that explain the reasoning behind people voluntarily wanting to move to these absolute shitholes we call "cities"? even some the wealthiest ones (pic related) are disgusting and by reasonable standards simply subhuman. yet, they are growing in size and population immensely and are praised in various forms of massculture. why?

Dont need a book. Its where a large proportion of social “things” happen. A city will almost always have more man made operations, resources, and specialty things then rural. That means job oprotunities, products, entertainment, social groups, activities, transport, information, etc.

NOt that its unilaterally good or anythin, but it does on a large scale attract HUmans statisticly for a verity of reasons.

Well, in the past it was for bigger safety from an organized attack, a big town had big walls surrounding it and more people available to defend it, including king's army. Then there is bigger employment chances, which over time became the sole reason to move into a big city.
I guess you could look up into industrial revolutions among other things, with development of industry and factories there were a lot of workers needed, and they had to be close by.

I've never lived in a city but I imagine people are drawn to them for the job opportunities, convenience, and variety.

If you're young it's a great place to be just because of the opportunities and social circles. Yes it has a lot of downsides but I consider them necessary evil unless you're a hermit who just doesn't see a reason to socialize. If you want to settle down then definitely move to something more remote.
