I really didn't like it OP. People here will say that I was filtered or some bullshit. But I thought it was a little all over the place and the story had a very nonsensical progression and was quite childish

No. Wizard Knight by him is good though

reading through it myself
first half was really good
i'm about a third of the way through the second half and it's getting way more hard to follow

As you can see, it's divisive. But the answer is yes. I love this book. The critiques really all boil down to 'it's not my thing' when you scrutinize them. It's objectively well-written fiction.

Hyperion was great, but I felt like the first book was retroactively undermined by the second for me when it became obvious that the author had no idea where the story would go when writing all the dumb "spikey terminator going back in time" shit in the original. Stopped reading the series at that point, no idea if it improves, I've heard from people that it gets even worse.

On the other hand, Book of the New Sun and Urth of the New Sun are amazing all the way throughout.

>> No.20309188

It has a very specific appeal. If you don't enjoy treating a story like a puzzle that can never be solved you'll hate it.

I’d say yes. It’s tough to get through at first, but like a lot of classics it’s wel worth it by the end.

Hyperion and BotNS are far and away my two favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy novels I’ve read. Comparing them isn’t really fair though. They both excel at different things.
I will say that the section of Hyperion where the girl is aging backwards and her parents have to watch helplessly was probably the most emotionally devastating thing I have ever read in a novel. It just really hit hard. It’s interesting how Simmons managed to use a totally impossible anomaly of time to craft something that feels so human. Hyperion has really stuck with me

As someone who has practically read wolfe's entire catalog, yes it's very good, but it's not his best
The entire solar cycle is three series
1. New sun (you posted it)
2. Long sun
3. Short sun
IMO short >>> long > new with short sun possibly being his best work
Wizard knight is also good
Pirate freedom and latro too

It is a masterpiece and one of the best books ever written. Nothing comes close to it. Just read it and see for yourself. The only people that badmouth this work of genius are mentally handicapped or simply badmouth anything that is related to sci-if/fantasy. Sometimes they are both.

Wizard Knight has a good beginning and end, but meandered hard all through the middle part when they were in Jotunland. It was also far more obvious than Wolfe's other works. I don't mind an aimless romp like Latro, but WK pushed the limits for me
