No matter what I get filtered chapter fucking 1.
This book is actually unreadable, and I've read the Illiad, Odyssey, Ulysses, the fucking Torah which is mostly just genealogy lists and other pretty dense works.
Seriously, what the fuck is this book, why is it so fucking tedious to read.

If you don't enjoy reading something don't? No one cares dude. A thread died for this.

Agreed. LOTR and Silmarillion were much better. The pacing of CoH is awful. Keeps switching between incredibly undetailed large spans of time and normal "real-time" narrative

Because it's unfinished scraps of paper dutifully assembled into a cashgra-- I mean, fine book under the stewardship of Chris Tolk Man.

I don't know why anyone would read anything beyond the usual 4 books. LOTR is perfect, I don't need to fill my image of it with fluff. However, that Alan Lee illustration is unfathomly based as always.

>> No.20225510

I loved the LOTR movies but couldn't get into the books. There were too many songs, too many poems, too many diversions that didn't add much to the world or characters.

You're thinking of the other two, especially Beren and Luthien. This one is mostly one narrative.

I don't enjoy it either, but fantasy fans categorically love this kind of shit. To them it's less about the moment-to-moment experience and more about the world itself. If you know video games, these are the same people who praise Morrowind and call it the best game ever. The average 5-minute stretch of time in Morrowind is just slowly walking around, but the world it creates is what made people love it.

Fantasy fans love the songs and backstories and stuff. To them it's not filler, it's like crack, and the only requirement is (1) you make it interesting, and (2) you don't fuck it up with inconsistency. Fantasy fags go apeshit over Tolkien because not only did he fulfill both criteria here, but he went above and beyond, and other works of fantasy since are just desperately trying to be as good as him and failing in some way or another which is why nerds will always be talking about him.
