when It came to things like philosophy, young men would usually gain wisdom from their father or chief via oral tradition. Think stuff like your father giving you a sit down once in a while, but On a larger scale. The priests/witch doctors provided a religious backbone by threatening to eat/curse anyone who disobeyed the philosophy, while giving spiritual guidance. All of it oral, all of it very at the moment. If there are any worthwile african philosophy around, it’s either like this or is never going to be translated to English regardless. They have no Plato or anything like that, although I’ve heard they had a few Islamic scholars in west and North Africa. That’s about it.

Ibn Batula was born in Africa- the first thing he did was leave Africa but we might still consider him African.
There were some Arabs during the Rashidan Caliphate that had some interesting ideas in North Africa.
Abu l-Hasan 'Ali Ibn Nafi', (AKA. Ziryab) comes to mind.

Even knowing these things I cannot think of a single great thinker who was actually African and from Afrika.
Many great thinkers traveled IN afrika, and some thinkers of ethinic afrikan descent exist.
But it is hard to escape the conclusion that anyone with any wisdom fled Afrika at the first opportunity.
