there is no such thing as gay and straight, all males are born with an attraction towards females but also with a low attraction towards other males, that low attraction is not equally low for all males so some may think that they were born "gay" from an early age and others from a more mature age where they were exposed to the homosexual self-question (like your case). The straight/gay dichotomy is made up to make people believe that they are naturally gay and can't change that. You have to see it as a vice, it is an attraction but it won't last forever if you know how to deal with it, is all about the mindset.

Well, I think you're right that most males probably have some low level attraction which may not even last and the dichotomy is kind of baloney -- because I've been pretty surprised at how many of my straight friends have had it -- but there are guys who are just straight-up fag and that's just a thing.

Historically, tolerance has varied, mostly agricultural societies didn't like it because reproduction was everything with the high death rates of children and women giving childbirth (although homosexuality remained a special taste for the ruling class). So the gays then dealt with it by repressing it and sublimating their desires into other areas like Frederick the Great whose father chopped his boyfriend's head off in front of him after they tried to flee to England together by crystallizing all that rage into a spearpoint of focus to aggressively destroy Prussia's enemies in Kesselschlacht battles of annihilation.
