I was reading a book about Bach's life and his works, at many points in the book the author wrote:

Every artist nowadays is either a self-deprecating, self-“aware” wimp or an egomaniac who thinks they’re great because they don’t actually know or care about the history of their art form and just like the status of an artist. We don’t have great artists anymore; the ones who put the work in all end up constantly apologizing through their work, begging the audience to know that they’re aware that they’re “standing on the shoulders of giants” and that nothing they can do will ever be better than the greats they were inspired by, and the ones who aren’t modest aren’t actually any good.
This is a problem in all art, but I see it the worst in modern cinema. Orson Welles wasn’t afraid to tell anybody he was great, because he was great, and he knew that because he was knowledgeable about all those who came before him, and knew where he stood after them. How did he get to stand there? By being great. By knowing that he could. How did he know that he could? Because he knew that he knew what he was doing, and before he knew what he was doing, he believed that he had the capability to know, and he did what he could to get to that point. He wasn’t an egomaniac and he wasn’t self-aware, he was confident, he didn’t think, he knew.
My only hope is to see a new generation of artists with this attitude, artists who believe in themselves and know the history but aren’t trapped underneath it or don’t want to simply destroy it. A generation of orson Welles who are so assured in their every move that they don’t need to worry about what other people think of them. Artists who know they’re great, because they are great.

Lmao this is a staple of C.S. Peirce, the father of semiotics, and pragmatism. He has over 80,000 pages of unpublished insane rambling manuscript drafts that very frequently declares incredibly complex conclusions with a flippant remark afterwards asserting "I've already proven this somewhere else, where I cannot recall, so I'm not going to do so here" or he'll just straight up write "as is plainly self evident" with the hilarious fact being that we're only now able to demonstrate through with any certainty through high powered computers that his ideas are actually true.

Bruce Lee:

Don’t speak negatively about yourself, even as a joke. Your body doesn’t know the difference.

If you don't want to be self-deprecating, the first step is to stop deprecating yourself. Get on your own team. Think: here are my assets, what can I do with them? Can I grow them? How far?

Growth mindset is a cliché but it works pretty damn well.

on imageboards there's no need to care about looking arrogant. indeed, you can have a lot of fun playing up your arrogance. but the moment an identity is linked to the argument, self-awareness starts to set in and the magic is lost.

>The reader may be disposed to suspect that this is merely a mathematician’s fancy, and that no such case would be likely ever to occur. But he may be assured that such occurrences are far from being rare. In order to satisfy him that this state of things does occur, I will mention an incontestable instance of it; — incontestable, at least, by any fair mind competent to deal with the problem.

A NOTE TO THE READER

It will quickly become apparent that in this work I have dispensed with the practice, hitherto universal in the field, of proving my results as I proceed. Occasionally, where a particularly appealing demonstration of correctness occurs to me, I may offer it; or where fruitful lines of enquiry regarding such a demonstration suggest themselves, I may jot them down for any reader who cares to pursue them. I do not, however, feel myself under any obligation to satisfy the pedantic, appease the intransigent or provide the pusillanimous with the safety-net of certainty. Let the sedulous apes of academia undertake such a task: I have more important matters in hand.

Like a man upon the shore of a vast and uncharted continent, I make my way into the forests of the interior. And you? Will you hang back, fearful for want of map and compass? Or will you trust your safety to the rifle of my intellect and the cutlass of your own, and — turn the page?

The world is my representation: this is a truth valid with reference to every living and knowing being, although man alone can bring it into reflective, abstract consciousness. If he really does so, philosophical discernment has dawned on him.

I always skip the introductions, then come back to them after finishing if I care about the book, which I usually do. I feel it taints the reading experience to know of the author's life/meaning of the book beforehand. Doesn't really apply when reading another work of the same author though, just the first one.
