did she do a good job "localizing" it to filthy westeners or she just watered it down?

It’s bad. Read Mair’s.

I love le guins writings but I'm really not sure why you'd read this
I refuse to read interpretations of books by people who can't even read the language they're 'translating' from

the existence of this book baffles me.
but as a personal project for Le Guin I can see it making sense.

what's interesting is that the text itself is not bad, it's actually less jarring than any other translation I've came across (turns out translating poetry from ancient chinese to english is a mess)
but that's the thing... this one probably doesn't work as a "translation", it's more like a rewrite/remake
it's Le Guin's "A Fistful of Dollars" to Laozi's "Yojimbo"

My book was translated by Gia-fu Feng and Jane English; they did a good job. I've been a taoist for over 10 years

The sage Ryokan noticed a shoot of bamboo growing through the floor of his closet. He admired bamboo (for it is empty and straight) and took great interest in the small shoot. Eventually, it grew too large for its enclosure, so he decided to burn a small hole in his roof. He took a candle to the thatching, but it caught fire more readily than expected and his entire hut, along with all of the surrounding bamboo, was destroyed in the blaze.
