Spoilers are a relatively recent phenomenon, since mass media gave us ever new stories to consume. In the olden days, peolpe had their few stories that they grew up with, so they knew how they went because they saw them again and again. For plays that meant that the execution of the story was more important than telling the story. Hell, a lot of Shakespear plays start with someone telling us the ending. "This is the story of how everyone died yadda yadda." So even as people wrote new stuff, the concept of keeping the ending a secret wasn't really something people cared about.

I dont care about them. I tell people any good literature will stay witg you longer than it takes to read it. A twist is so ethereal that it spoiling it doesnt matter to me in tge long run. The biggest revelations are the personal ones.

>> No.19860820

I don't think so. I imagine they only really became a big deal when mystery novels became big, since they're one of the only genres it actually matters in

>> No.19862046

No. Outside of specific stuff like murder mysteries, plot twists are a crutch and a cheap gag. It's the storytelling equivalent of jump scares and shock humor.

A good literary work cannot really be ruined by a spoiler, but the joy of reading it the first time can be hampered if essential plot points are revealed before hand – the desire to see how a story develops and what happens to its characters is an engine that drives the reader forward. But then there are many on this board who insist that plot does not matter at all, an opinion so stupid and elitist in the most childish way that I've never seen it stated anywhere else.

My IRL discussions of media with people I try not to spoil things for people mainly because they get very noisy when I do, and I dislike the noisiness. In return they ask me if I care about spoilers and I always say no because no matter how often they recommend me schlock, I'll never consume it and I'd rather just give my (correct) opinion about it based on their short retelling of whatever subversive bullshit propaganda they consumed last week.

Even if I did get spoiled, I don't really care. If something's good it'll still be good even if I know how it'll end ahead of time.

Imagine reading Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when it first came out. That twist must have blown EVERYONE'S minds. It's so universally known at this point that we forget what it must have been like when it first came out.
