What are some good horror books that bridge the gap between genre and "serious" literature? I find horror literature and a lot of the ideas fascinating but the actual writing is so fucking awful most of the time. I've seen Thomas Ligotti and Brian Evenson's names thrown around often, anyone else worth checking out?

Arthur Machen. He's been a big influence on most bigname horror writers

I can second Machen, or at least his story "The White People".
