To normal people, even stupid deracinated people like boomers and millennials who are sub-normal and defective but still being measured by the criterion of normalcy, history is a real thing that existed, centuries and eons of your ancestors actually passed in order to put you where you are now. There's some instinct so deep it's almost physical that comes from knowing this, even if you know nothing else. It creates at least a residual sense that humanity is big and diverse and you are one tiny product of it, and if you wanted to have an opinion, you should at least pretend to know something about humanity's development or at least your most recent precursors.

For zoomers, "the past" is like an ultra-condensed but timeless orb that contained all the fragments and rudiments of culture in a fused state until it exploded for no reason in the year 2000, creating the cosmos like a can of multicolored paint exploding. The world is one big surface covered in different bright but meaningless streaks of color to slop around in and fingerpaint with.

There's no REASON for it being the way it is, whatever is scattered and strewn about on the depthless surface just is the contents of the zoomer world-egg before it exploded and created an in medias res world where Hollywood movies and porn always already existed and having an interest in something means downloading a set of preconceived opinions, stock phrases, and sometimes a corollary worldview like installing software on a computer.

Imagine when all the remaining tethers to real reality are gone and all we have left are ELDERLY ZOOMERS and their post-zoomer children and grandchildren. Imagine zoomers at the head of every government, a zoomer behind the wheel of every vehicle or machine. At least the sleepwalking of the boomers and the dopey drug haze of the millennials still took place on some real ground, zoomers are free-floating daydreams about themselves, not even dreamers having daydreams anymore, just free-floating fragments of past thoughts and images. Zoomers are like the cloud left behind by an exploding star, there is no core to that nebula anymore, it's JUST a cloud that still has residual inertia and structure from when there was a star in there.

We played a game at our Christmas party where you put an index card with the name of a famous person (Shakespeare, Napoleon, Babe Ruth, Elvis Presley etc) on your head and other people gave you hints as to who was on your card and none of the kids knew who most of the figures were.

They aren't bad kids, they just don't seem to have much of a desire to learn or retain anything I teach them. I've been teaching the same kids for 2-3 years now and I honestly don't think any of them are any smarter than they were when I first met them. I will often quiz them on things we talked about the prior week and they can rarely remember even basic details about what we discussed. It is very disheartening.

I've resorted to trying to teach them basic morals: Don't lie, don't steal, don't covet etc because I'm starting to get the impression that these kids have learned nothing from my lessons and that as soon as they leave for college they will forget everything and become indistinguishable from kids who were raised as atheists.

As technology gets better, so does the breadth of knowledge of the average person—history in PARTICULAR, fucking boomers. Media makes historical and literary references all the fucking time, and education's unironically (yes, unironically) better than it's EVER been, with more tools and resources available to your average zoom-zoom. Not to mention, with time comes the uncovering of new details to historical accounts, new perspectives and interpretations—AND its relentless march sees shit your grandparents would have lived through BECOME the history. The future will always be one step ahead of you in that regard.

Nowadays, you don't need to go to a library to read, you don't even need to hold physical fucking book in your hands to do it. Nor do you need to professors in the flesh to get a lesson on anything—literally ANYTHING—with the bonus of being able to REPLAY whatever the fucker is saying, or slow it down, or skip parts as you're assed. Want to discuss ideas, study with peers? Do it from wherever you want, without giving a singular shit about physical limitation. Tomes, fucking libraries of information, fit inside a machine thinner than the size of a textbook. Think your ancestors dreamed of shit like this?

We are living in the most radiant, golden age humanity has ever experienced, and you are bitter. Bitter because you're old, and decaying, and envy the golden youth that will go on to create even more dazzling marvels. You have wasted your life, and lash out angrily at the new wave of potential, because they're who you might have been if only you'd been born later, if only you'd made something of yourself while you still could. I pity you, and I hope you get the help you need.

I'm pretty sure this is bait but on the off chance it isn't: Have you ever read letters written by soldiers in the US Civil War? These people were mostly common men, farmers, carpenters and blacksmiths and yet they were able to write incredibly eloquent and introspective pieces of literature. I can't imagine the average American in 2022 being able to write this way, or even think this deeply about current events. All anyone cares about is bread and circuses now.

It's a cliché to complain "wow, kids are ignorant these days", but there is such a thing as objective reality, and the latest generation of state-schooled children in England are a despair.

Up to about the 1960s England had a vaguely sensible school system. Then certain parties decided to wreck it, but at least the teachers in the new schools had been taught in the sensible schools, so they knew something. The next generation of teachers had been taught in rubbish schools but by decent teachers, so they were a bit worse, but not terrible. But every iteration multiplies the problem, and things are now finally falling off the cliff.

On a personal level, I've really noticed it the last few years with my niece. She's not stunningly bright but not stupid. At Christmas we talk a lot and play a bunch of games which involve general knowledge.

She sixteen and she knows almost nothing. She has a few snippets of highly specialized knowledge mixed in with the woke bullshit, but there's no basic cultural framework whatsoever. (In particular she knows almost no history.)

The current generation of teenagers really do believe (insofar as they believe anything) that Martin Luther King was a more important person than Martin Luther. (That's if they've even heard of Martin Luther, which they haven't.) They really do believe that Anne Frank was a more important person than Charles Darwin. That Nelson Mandela was a more important person than Frederick the Great. Their idea of ancient history is a vague unfocused belief that John F. Kennedy was the greatest American president and Nixon the most evil.

It's not their fault. It's what they've been told.

i've been dying for someone to isolate this fucking phenomenon and describe it as a sociological "thing" that takes place across many different domains

so much of the impact of 1960s institutionalized hippie-ism was delayed by the fact that all the first institutionalizers and even THEIR students were still rebelling against the old in their advocacy of the new, and thus still connected to the old

the real nightmare always seems to begin with that first generation that doesn't see itself as rebelling against x by doing y, but is simply Y

Zoom-zoom here. I'm by no means a /his/torian, but I understand what some of it is and how it works. I'd like to say I have sonder, but my emotions are too muted and my perception is too warped to tell. I'm hyperaware of certain things, but it doesn't give me assurance on how to perceive extremely large/small periods of time or objects, e.g. countries with millions of people and atoms. I've only tricked myself with some snow-globe version of the Universe when "understatement" doesn't begin to describe how false that is. All of this makes my daily goings seem so mundane, flat, and meaningless—even when EVERYTHING has meaning, even when I find so much referenced in a few lines of text.

I think there are lots of factors involved. Some are timeless; others are recent phenomena. Here's one which I think is important and under-discussed.

When I was growing up, it was possible for an average intelligent person to understand, from first principles upwards, the technological world around him. Not in detail, but in broad strokes. You know about wheels and levers, and you can sort of jump mentally from those to your car. You might not understand everything about it, but you never feel that it's essentially *beyond you*. Given time, you *could* understand it.

When I got my first computer I could basically understand how the hardware worked. I bought some games for it but mostly I just programmed it. The best games were better than anything I could write, but not *immeasurably* better. I could disassemble them and look at the code and hack it to give myself 255 lives and so on.

These days, technology (hardware and software) is so advanced and so cheap and so readily-available and so appealing and so easy-to-use, that this sort of conceptual top-to-bottom thread has simply snapped. Everyone has an iPhone, but trying to actually get from PRINT "HELLO WORLD" to Google Maps or voice-recognition is so mind-bogglingly difficult that people don't even contemplate taking the first step. It's just magic to them.

I think this has a profound effect on people's psychology. They retreat entirely into an infantile state and just watch the pretty lights.

Most people have IQ's of 100, why does it matter what their level of general knowledge is anyways. They will always just be sheep who are more interested in their personal social life than anything else. They will still just end up with an average job because that is what they are capable of and then they will fall into the grid, waste away their days following basic routines and eventually die not having done anything extraordinary. I understand your feeling though. I never had access to books about the cold war ending and nobody bothered to tell me about it, so even though I was well read as a child I still made it to 16 years old writing a short essay about contemporary Germany for a test and I wrote about how poor it was, partly due to be divided between the communist bloc and the USA and its allies. You should have seen the look on my teacher's face when he told me Germany was one of the wealthier nations in Europe and my face when I realized I had no idea what I was talking/writing about.

Rare book store (be prepared to spend way more than you think is fair) or go to an independent bookstore to see if they can find you a copy (they probably can't). You're best off getting a print on demand copy.

I think the difference is back then the ones with an urge to write down their thoughts in a diary or via correspondence were already inclined to being more eloquent and introspective, whereas the mouth-breathers back then never bothered and doubly never had an outlet to convey their thoughts. I could spend 20 minutes writing a response to explain in-depth why you are wrong, but I'm too lazy, so I'll leave it at this:
You can argue the wonder of the available resources until the cows come home, but that's not actually at all related to if people actually are LEARNING. By all measures literacy has plummeted in the US, mathematical ability has declined, and suicidality and obesity have both skyrocketed. Admitting the problem is the first step to solving it, sitting in your wagie cage talking about how great life is while kids cut their dicks off to thunderous applause because TikTok told them to helps no one.

I had a moment like this. Well I've had a few, but one in particular has really stuck with me: when I was in high school there was a loud, rambunctious black girl in many of my classes who had been repeatedly held back, and in one of these classes I had with her there was a general silence in the room as we did our work. A little murmuring, but nobody paid attention. With sudden confidence and passion, this girl blurted out "Holland is in Africa, that's why they say hallelujah."

The look of absolute defeat on the teachers face hasn't left me either.
