my brother's turning 17, and he really enjoys fantasy books, mostly medieval and greek or nordic mythology, but is also fond of science fiction
he watched DUNE on the cinema recently, and seemed to really enjoy it
will the first three books make a good birthday gift, or are they not fit for a teenager?
I've also seen a lot of people saying good things about the first book, but not as much about the others. Are they worth reading?

1 is a nice book, about as challenging to read as Lotr so maybe a tad too slow for a teenager, but probably a decent gift if he likes the movies.
2 is a follow up to 1, more of the same.
3 is a bridge book from 2 to 4, very boring but recommended to get to 4.
4 is genuinly the best Sci Fi book of all time, and has moderatly challenging philosophy and some slightly questionable stuff.
5-6-(7) are an unfinished trilogy where Herberts old pervert power breaks through, in one of them a 12 year old gets raped by a sex witch in order to activate his psychical skills.

Depending on how pea brained your brother is books 1+2, 1-4, 1-6 or the graphic novel would make good gifts. Maybe book 1+2+graphic novel so he can feel cool for knowing the next few movies ahead of the crowd and has an easier entry.

>I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Probably a good call, forgot to mention that there is a 1000 year timeskip from book 3 to book 4, people are turning into worms and stuff gets deep.
If he likes Warhammer 40k, the God Emperor of Mankind is heavily inspired by the God Emperor of Dune.
