This only vaguely answers your question, but the only Pynchon I read was Crying of Lot 49, which is short, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I only partially went through a DFW novel (I think Consider the Lobster), and it was enjoyable apart from dealing with the footnotes. I was a lot younger though, and I don't think it would bother me now.
