I like the tafsir (quran commentary) by rashid rida but I am not well versed in islamic theology
the most important thing is that you join a tradition, bc if you will not, you just become a western salafist weirdo without any authentic connection to your new faith

Yes you are certainly right to recommend him to join a mosque. Otherwise he would end up being one of these online larpers. I won't even suggest him a specific sect, I am only saying he should be mindful of the specific background and prejudices of the imam.

You need to find an imam or even better a shaykh who follows one of the four schools of islamic jurisprudence, as they were traditionally passed down to us. He will tell you how to practice the religion and what to read/learn. Avoid quranists, salafis and people without lineage.
