I bought Being and Nothingness and Existentialism is a Humanism a couple weeks ago. I read 50 pages of E is a H tonight, and god damn does this shit suck. Is all of his shit like this? I bought both of these books blind purely because I know the name Sartre and figured he might be similar to Nietzche because he's an existentialist or similar to other post-modern french philosophers like Deleuze in style, but he's not. Is it his writing or just a shite translation? I know Being and Nothingness is supposed to be a rather dry tome. Are any of his novels any good?

His philosophy was accused of being bourgeoisie, and so, as the title suggests, Sartre came up with Existentialism is a Humanism as a defense against those accusations. I think it's pretty good, but it's not representative of Sartre's philosophy as a whole and not terribly similar with Being and Nothingness. Personally I believe B&N is a great book and deserves to be read more on /lit/.

Then on the right side there is the Portable Nietzsche. I understand what the left two have in common. What do you specifically mean by passive interest, and what makes Epicurus' philosophy passive?

I understood Epicurus' writings as arguing for living a life of simple pleasure. Is it that if we are only concerned for our own pleasure, then we aren't as active in the lives of others? That it lacks some sort of higher virtue or ideal to strive towards? But then aren't these things just spooks? Technically, isn't anything to take an active interest in, that doesn't directly work in our interest a spook?

Another, what do you mean by active interest? I'll be honest, I understood Stirner and Epicurus, but I had a really hard time with Nietzsche, but regardless, what about Nietzsche creates an active interest? In what way?
