The Taylor translation has a special place in my heart because i memorised half of the opening monologue from it. But from the excerpts, i quite like the Luke one as well.

I speak German natively and Atkins & Taylor feels to me like they have captured the spirit best, from comparing the first couple verses among all the excerpts on that pic.

Nice OP, I just had a gas looking up 'best Faust translations' on reddit and pirating the missing mentions. Once you get past the glowing review of Kaufman's semitic spew, some of the absolute worst translations I've ever seen litter the 'middle' upboat stream. Any addition would be more detraction.

I see no need for the revision honestly; Garnett reads very well. I read McDuff first so his C&P will always have a special place for me, but P&V are simply the best (stay away from their Tolstoy translations!), alongside Garnett.

I don't like the way P&V reads in the excerpt up there, I prefer the revised Garnett. The problem with her work is that to my knowledge she worked quickly and doesn't distinguish voices and styles as well as other translators, so a revised Garnett seems like a good idea.

I'm still here waiting for more anons to join. The Germans still haven't reached a consensus about the Faust translations, so far we have two points for Taylor and one for Kaufmann, and I'm really curious as I wanna read Faust soon.

The best Faust translation I've found is an obscure one by some guy named Carl Mueller. It translates the whole play, and retains a lot of the humor and varied language of the original. The sacrifice was the original rhythm, but it's impossible to keep the rhythm and retain all the other kinds of wordplay

I've only read the Williams translation, and while I did still enjoy the story of Faust, the translation seemed a bit dull and a bit lifeless to me, so I'll definitely have to re-read it again in another one. Anyone else feel the same?

I'd suggest using a shorter passage. Faust is on of my top 3 and I read multiple translations side by side, but I'm not reading your image lol. Use something shorter.
