19490546 No.19490546 [Reply] [Original]

I'm unable to overcome the nihilism of Peter Wessel Zapffe, /lit/.

I can't even eat or sleep properly after reading The Last Messiah. The thought of consciousness being a result of matter and the cause of all suffering is too much for me to live with. Is there anything that I can read that will challenge my materialism/pessimism/nihilism? I don't know how I'm going to live if I keep seeing the world in this way.

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. I just want to get through this.

What the fuck bro? These things are synonymous. Even Zapffe himself wasn't sure how the fuck consciousness emerged. Most Pessimists aren't materialists.

Do you know Zapffe was in love with rock climbing? He was a great /out/door guy and admitted mount climbing is a cope but an excellent one. Go try some off that shite.

I thought he argued that it was somehow a product of matter? Doesn't he state that only material exists in TLM?

i personally believe that nietzsche was refuted by zapffe, but he might help you nonetheless. read on the genealogy of morals. do not subject yourself to the spiritual poison that the sickly in life use to cope with it.

Lobotomize yourself. Get rid of the thing that plagues you so. But what's it worth to lose the very thing by which you understand how and why you're suffering?

not from what i know. nietzsche provides an opposite point of view though.
>Also, what have you found that helps you endure?
nothing because i love zapffe and his ideas. when nietzsche started talking about asceticism and slave morality and the like, it really resounded with me. these pessimistic ideas are like medicine to people who suffer from life, but poison to the healthy.

I don't even agree with him all the time, but Kastrup's system is supposed to be compatible with that sort of thing. He's not a dualist, he's an objective idealist. Materialism is a dead end though.
Materialists love to point out how brain damage is somehow proof of materialism. Well, how is suffering from a stroke any different from smashing my hand with a hammer? Of course physical events have an effect on the mind. That means nothing to me whatsoever.
Zapffe can act like the enlightened guru who has figured everything out and pretend everybody else is a stupid idiot, but I've yet to be convinced of materialism. That's the heart of the problem. Forget Zapffe's melodramaticism.
I myself believe in Leibniz's views from the Monadology.

If you could articulate his arguments it would make more sense for you to feel this way but I'm confused at your supposed conviction with so much lacking. Sounds like you don't understand your self and are unwillingly thrown this way and that by philosophies of the week. I suggest stop fighting the void and meditate
>The thought of consciousness being a result of matter and the cause of all suffering is too much for me to live with.
Sorry but this really doesn't strike me as novel. People have been saying this for centuries.
I googled this guy youre talking about and he appears to be a modern shill. I can't think of anything more retarded than proclaiming yourself to be a pessimist.

good luck

What if I told you that our immortal and non-physical self is the immediate and unchanging awareness which is unaffected by mental and bodily changes and which continues on unchangingly regardless of them, always present in every instance, and that this is present in exactly the same way in everyone, and that it is totally unaffected and continues all the same when someone has a stroke, or is deaf, drunk, delirious, asleep, brain-injured, etc

I understood until he seemingly jumped to cognition of time creating time. I don't trust his ontological proof either, where the universe somehow self-selects from ubt. I dont see how any universe can be self-creating in the way he imagines: in order to create, it would have to already be real, which makes any self-creating superfluous. Really, many things confuse me about his philosophy after he justifies the three M's and three C's. His whole justification of free will seems faulty: he says the universe has no external thing real enough to determine it, so it must be self-determining, but why can't it just exist? All refutations of this position that he has given seem to me to be vague, saying it secretly relies on an unreal thing, which makes no sense to me.

What part of the brain am I? All of it? A portion of it? Am I not also the rest of the body? How can an organ that is changing constantly constitute a self? Is an essential self an illusion? Does matter have any being whatsoever? Do you know what’s at the bottom of it? How would you know? Do you have access to a reality outside of your subjective perception?

>There's no magic ghost that is somehow the real "You"
that would actually be the immaterial self of awareness
>You are the meat in your skull, damage that shit and you change permanently
That's wrong though, the awareness which knows thoughts and their distortion by cognitive impairment remains simply awareness either way
