How was he so based? I can't respect any philosopher--or anyone really--if he isn't a Platonist in some shape or form.

Because he was foundationalist. All other structures are a reach. It explains causation/ontology well and accurately.

For me, it’s the sceptics

Yeah. And Pyrrho, and Sextus, and Cicero. Some of them are Academics, I suppose

I am a better husband to Sophia than you, dogmatist

You don't even know where to look for Sophia, much less be her husband. You've declared yourself denied before even starting.

I dont like his views on the arts

>> No.19488466

There are undoubtedly some great and wise poets, but you couldn't deny most poets espouse misguided views.

That's just the Republic, he's much nicer to art and poets in his other works.

>> No.19488514

This. I mean "poets" in the ancient Greek context includes playwrights. Look at Hollywood, Netflix etc. to get the modern equivalent of that. I'd ban all that shit without giving a second though.

Now that you mention Republic, I was very disappointed when I got to his views about family. Aside that, great book.

He no doubt gives good reasons for his arguments, and they do follow. I just honestly disagree that one needs to make a perfect republic, because if it involves censorship of the arts i can no longer personally support it.

If you look at the transition of the west during the 20th century from the "aristocratic" culture to modern culture, no doubt there were economical and political factors involved, but I think a large part of it was due to modernist authors propagating their neuroses and degeneracy to the masses. I find much of modernism unreadable out of moral reasons, but I hope you agree with me that it's a sad thing the "aristocratic" culture was abolished in favor of what we have today.

Scepticism is the result of much inquiry, not a foregone conclusion
