DON'T START WITH THE GREEKS. DON'T READ ANYTHING BEFORE SHAKESPEARE AND CERVANTES. THERE ARE SOME EXCEPTIONS, BUT FOR THE MOST PART THE GREEKS ARE NOT WORTH YOUR TIME. *turns caps off* just read the wikipedia articles for the greeks and you get the idea. you're reading a translation anyway so give it up. homer wasn't even a real person. Shakespeare was.

end for le janni: KEK YOURSELF IDIOT

note to anon: if you are considering learning an archaic language (latin, greek, hebrew) you are wasting your time. learn a real language you will actually use.

Know from experience eh? Kek. I'd suggest the Greek plays should be read/watched and the epics are a must, but the philosophy is definitely skippable

I think it's worth learning Hebrew to read the bible

i would only suggest those after you are well acquainted with modern literature. the greeks aren't that interesting for someone who doesn't know a lot about literature. i don't see how something such as the iliad is regarded so highly. it probably is a masterpiece in its own right, but to me it just read like a superhero movie. it just doesn't compare to most great novels of the 20th century.

congratulations, you used the NPC phrase that allows the entire thread to be dismissed

I've only read the Odyssey, and it says a lot about how the Greeks viewed war, violence, and trauma. Odysseus literally can't stop fighting even after the war's been over for 20 years. Modern day soldiers have signed up for additional tours because they couldn't adapt back to civilian life, and the Greeks figured that aspect of human psychology in fucking 800 B.C. It's also fun, fuck you.
