Nota bene you should take a stroll though the "per-historic" mythology that sets up these next two. The pic, that is to say.

There's a shit Hollywood Iliad with Brad Pitt (plus probably a few older and animated telling, not to mention variations a la O' Brother) and one really good Odyssey mini-series from the 90's. It was made by American Zoetrope (Francis Ford Coppola productions) and Henson (Muppets, Sesame Street) creature shop. Great Tartarus effects.

I meant The Odyssey for O Brother, not Iliad.

but yeah, the Armand Assante (Judge Dredd's brother) Odyssey is superb.

Not a single book per se, but the legends of Davy Crockett are probably the most similar thing we have in terms of retaining both the thematic spirit of Homer and the historical/hagiographic tone of it.

On that note our Caesar is Abraham Lincoln and our Robin Hood is Jesse James.

There aren't exactly battle scenes in the book, rather massacre scenes which McCarthy subverts through repetition.

Did they make more like this? I seem to remember a Jason and the Argonauts and a Hercules adaptation that had a similar charming mix of cool practical and rough chi. Were they by the same team?
