His personal leftist politics manifested in his writings. Every single male character he writes is an absolute asshole, even the ones that aren't rapists. To Bakker, all masculinity is inherently toxic masculinity, the simple fact that all his male characters use the term "womanish" as an insult makes that blatantly obvious. Anon you did good, I went until page 300 and there a scene where the whore makes sex with a guy and he ejaculates "black seed", wtf it is disgusting. There is another scene where the love of the whore is outside of the door while she is making sex with a customer. The book is a complete shitshow. The Bible has 1700 or so pages and there is only one passage where the daughters of Lot make sex with him to further his house because he had no manchild. Bakker is edgy and can write a good sentence, but his sensibility is repulsive and his characters unappealing.

If you want a grandiose fantasy I recommend the old greats that one anon mentioned up above, Zelazny is my personal favorite

I'm halfway through book 3, The Thousandfold Thought. I'm a /pol/ kind of guy, and Bakker's lefty sentiments make me puke, but honestly, the books come across much more as edgy and pretentious than particularly Leftist. If you can stomach Moorcock (badum-bum!), and I can, then you can deal with Bakker. The world-building and attention to detail are genuinely excellent. The viewpoint characters are hit-or-miss: I really like some of them, but others annoy me. The many different varieties of rape-monster don't bother me; I dig a badguy that is super disgusting and obviously bad. The books are grimdark, mudcore, and 100% sincere with no camp, no humor, and no ironic distance.

Personally I'm up to the The Great Ordeal after starting with Bakker last month. The dude is probably the best fantasy author who imitates Tolkien, simply because he also understands what makes something "Epic," while at the same time giving his characters the kind of petty, "human" motivations we see in real history, and reflected in Tolkien, though in more childfriendly fashion, through the Hobbits. It's the Aeneid written by an Ovid.

That said the Prince of Darkness is a lot better than the Aspect-Emperor series, simply because the first is so much better at creating these intricate webs of human actors at odds with each other.
