These are all the books Ive read in the past 4-5 months, after realizing theres no way i could claim to be smarter than other people without having read a book since high school. The only 2 missing are Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and Culture of Critique, on loan to a coworker. I have so many false starts with Speedboat. I love it when I just read random excerpts. I end up dropping it shortly when I start from the beginning. Adler was definitely a heavy influence on DFW you can tell. She has that snarky ironic thing down pat. What are your thoughts so far?

I've read 4 other brautigan novels - watermelon sugar, trout fishing in america, so the wind wont blow it all away, and the abortion; an historical romance - plus one collection of his poetry and a couple short stories from his revenge of the lawn collection.
He's amazing. Really. Grab so the wind won't blow it all away and the binduo of trout fishing / watermelon sugar.
My favs were trout fishing for his more ridiculous mode and so the wind wont blow it all away for his more realistic mode, though he never seems to be fully in either camp.
They read so easy. Like if hemingway had a sense of humour and more tenderness. They are complex works though, just thematically.
i resolved to read through every work of prose he's written at some point tho. In fact, my name on here is a reference to a brautigan book.

Sometimes tedious, but "quiet" seems to be an apt display of how the main character (and at some points, the fortunate in general) is forced into a silence while the global/industrial world grinds so many of the unfortunate down within it who scream their pain out to people like the narrator. Fascinating stuff.
Plus it's hilarious in many spots.

I think he was coming around. He was always socializing with whites. He reminded me of an Oreo who tried to prove his blackness. He was still very charismatic and had some decent points. In a CIA rabbit hole atm. Shitty floor pic since I've just moved in to my new place

I've read everything on this stack except for The Story of Philosophy, which was recently gifted to me by my mum. I had mentioned over dinner a few weeks ago that I was beginning to develop an interest in philosophy (thanks /lit/) and she must have taken note of it. Very grateful

Programmed to Kill is probably the only "schizo" book I own but I thought it was pretty interesting for the most part. Open to recs similar to it. thinking of checking out Lisa Pise's A Lie Too Big to Fail, recommended by a friend

As for the Malcolm X autobiography I only l put it there because I saw it pop up a couple times early in the thread. Good book

Mrs dalloway is great. Some awesome quotables, an intense and emotional love story, excellent and complex characters, super engaging writing throughout and fascinating commentaries about memory, time, war, love, gender, etc. The septimus parts were my fav.
What a treasure of a writer woolf is.

Yeah, if her style does nothing for you, then you won't find her books interesting at all. I find her style thrilling. Mrs dalloway has quite a bit of tension that the unsympathetic might not care to be attuned to or feel because it is so subtle.
The biggest thing you can say about woolf's books is that if you like that sort of thing, then they definitely are the sort of thing you will like.

Hindu gods interact with humans through avatars. Krishna is one of the avatars of Vishnu (one of the main Gods). He's an important character in BG.

Hinduism has many sects which revolve around a particular God, some extreme. ISKCON is probably on the extreme end of Vishnu followers.
