references I do think matter a lot, but if you are a decent student (achieving at least a first) and you ask for references from lecturers you got really great feedback from - it will all mostly be the same as other students. work experience does not matter at all unless you have research or teaching experience, in which case I think that would definitely be helpful, though I didn't have any of this type of experience myself.

what seemed to me to matter most was both my writing sample and research proposal/interests - at the end of the day that is going to prove your individual skills best and your research proposal (if you have to write one) is going to show you have both a decent idea and whether or not you would be a good fit with the department i.e. if there is anyone that would be a perfect fit to supervise you, or whether your interests fit in with that of the faculty. if everyone youre competing with has a first and good references, then individual writing sample and research proposal is what will distinguish you. these two things, also, were the main things talked about in the interview I had.

as for my final year undergrad I averaged at 82/100

Also when I visited nobody seemed very interested in visiting lectures in subjects they didn't take, I thought this was more common? Was hoping to sit in on an English lecture here and there.

Thanks desu. I averaged 78 last year. I think my references are OK, one of my chosen ones is the personal tutor I had at my home University, and another is a lecturer I had whilst studying abroad during my undergrad degree. I had a great relationship with both. I was concerned about my lack of work experience. I'm taking a year out from education atm with the intention of getting internships on commissioned research within the field I hope to study but it's been hard to find opportunities. I'm happy to hear that it doesn't seem to be as big of a deal as I thought it might, but also do think it could set me apart from other applicants so will continue to look for opportunities.
One other question I have is
> How similar is the course you're studying at postgrad to what you were studying at undergrad?
I want to switch subjects see, but they're both a part of the same Faculty/School so I'm guessing it should be fine. My thesis was also closer to what I want to study at Cambridge than the subject I did for Undergad.
Also another question.
> My writing sample is going to be from my undergraduate dissertation. Would you advise that I send a coherent chunk from the text that flows in the same way the original copy of my diss does (so for example, Section 2-5, or 3-7, or should I pick out some sections from the text that I think highlights my strengths, put them together, and then send it to them? (a few bits from section 1 that I think are written well, a bit or two from chapter 3, one from chapter 8, etc.)
One more
> In the 'additional information to support application' section I was considering writing some things that I hope to accomplish over the coming year that are relevant to my course of choice, I have some things in the pipeline but I'm not doing them yet so I couldn't pass them off as work experience, would it be a good idea to include this or do you think these hypothetical experiences will look a bit shit and I should use this space to focus on something else instead?
Finally
> do you know if there is a word count on the writing sample? or do I just adhere to the 2MB file size limit when uploading it?
Apologies for hitting you with a lot but I really don't have anyone in my life I can ask about this

Work hard and transfer to a better school, then you can feel better about it later. I went to a community college, transferred to a four year school, then did my abroad study at the college in OP's pic, then went to a top graduate school. The best way to get over your inferiority complex about community college is to get past community college.

If I just want to learn, and not deal with political bs of left or right, where do I go? Like can I just learn from, and with, really smart people who are interested in knowledge. I don't even need a job out of it. Like how do I become a polymath Renaissance man?

It's local and cheaper than private or going out of state. Also transferred from cc.

I don't have a reason why I'm going here like "I want to go here" or something like that.

The administration could best be described as "purgatory" and the professors are all but wageslaves.

I should have gone literally anywhere else. This place is the educational equivalent of the DMV.

Eh, it's okay. There are a lot of normies and by-the-book chuds around. But I imagine that's the case for all universities. And field is kind of badly set up right now, so not that much going on and not that many opportunities. Though I'm not the research type of guy, which any modern university is specialized on. That's what most people on here as well can't stand, from what I could gather. You shouldn't put too much passion? fervor? into studying and into identifying with being a student, being a student here, being a person of whatever-you-study. I'm really just here for a degree; and that's saved me from quitting with the type of people I've met academically. The teachers are mostly okay though: very social, direct, friendly and personal. That's a strong side of most German universities. I've heard some bad things from physics though concerning graduate studies.

The city is really doing it for me more than studying. If you're a writer, artist, any kind of anon type of guy then this is the perfect place. It's pretty expensive but even an entry level side job can pay for your place and a lot of extra consumerism leaving you with a lot of free time to do whatever you want. You need to live in the Altstadt though.
I'd probably like to do my graduate in New York or Berlin. Not that those schools are necessarily all that good, but I imagine the variety of people around is by virtue of those city's size alone more varied, and for me, thus, more interesting.

Imagine not being independently wealthy despite the fact that you live simultaneously with crypto, frequent a website that were first-movers in crypto, and have lived through a global pandemic where it was completely fucking obvious in march '20 that most tanking stock would do at least a 5x from the historic low, and that being just slightly intelligent about what you longed and what you shorted meant several more 5-15x.

No fucking really, imagine considering wageslaving away your by far most precious resource, your time and energy, is DESIRABLE if you just manage to land a slightly more well-paid wageslave position. What a colossal fucking faggot one would need to be to program computers for FAGMAN and consider that to be a worthy use of that most remarkable gift of consciousness.

For real: imagine going to college, where friendships for life are forged, and THEN ESTABLISHING these circles with the most mindnumbingly boring bugmen imaginable.
Just fucking imagine pursuing STEM.

Enjoy writing glorified dildo website optimizations for the rest of your life.
