If this were a modern novel, he would just be a gamer incel, right?

If Dosto were alive in the modern day, the circumstances of his life would be so drastically different that he wouldn’t have made this book (or likely any)

Tolstoy would write YA epic fantasy.

Tolstoy would be too busy snorting cocaine and travelling for instagram

The general message of this book is all wrong, because most people are just dicks and stomaches that can talk. There really is not an inner life hidden behind politeness and convention. He's trying to persuade thoughtful losers to believe in humanity, and trying to overcome the most common barrier good and capable men have towards society. Their own idleness, and the stupidity of quotidian life. Don't bother unless you're dumb enough for it, this book is trickery

Have you read Dosto’s other books, and if so how did you feel about them (not OP)

No, he would be a clerk from the army living off ptsd and tinnitus disability pay.

Wrong. His thing is that he is an independent adult but a painfully poor one. He'd be more like a blue collar level unemployed poorfag looking for work but not finding it because all jobs are taken by immigrants or shipped away to the third world. Bumming around them dusty ass desert cities nearby the US-Mex border, doing nothing with his life but feeling bitter at the world, living in neighborhoods full of whores and criminals and junkies, think of something like Bukowski's Post-Office (which is terrible) or something like Taxi Driver of all things.

What >>19328325 is correct, but I would also add the fact that Underground Man is also woefully unable to relate and connect with his fellow man. The dinner scene and the prostitute are evidence of this.

No, OP, you're again pretending that classic novels adhered to their context can be translated into yours.

Sure, I guess.

I started reading it last night, currently about 6 chapters in. So far it's just boring whining written in a convoluted manner which is hard to understand only with the occasional "literally me" sentence that keeps me hanging in there

No way am I putting myself through 900 pages of Brothers Karamazov after this

>The general message of this book is all wrong
I think your mind have been corrupted by the school literature's "what's the general message of this book" essays. Dostoyevsky is too complex to approach in such terms. It's not trickery either, it's just a faithful reflection of the complexity of man.

No. What a lot of zoomers tend to miss about these kinds of characters is that they are OLD. In my copy of Steppenwolf there's a note from the author expressing frustration about kids going "he's just like me"

Probably a divorced banker or lawyer who is down on his luck or a Trump supporter. The underground man was decently successful socially being a mid tier civil servant.

Huh? Is that what people think the point of the book is, to convince people to have faith in humanity? Dostoyevsky's other books might have that as a theme but I didn't read that in Notes From Underground at all. Seemed more like a study of a specific type of person and the intellectual discourse that was going on at the time.
