I found out today that the cozy town library I grew up in is being closed down, the original building that contains it is being given back to its original estate. The building was built in the 1800’s, covered in ivy with beautiful marble reliefs and gorgeous wood carvings, and it had these lofts and catwalks covered in stained glass where you could tuck yourself away and fall into a good book. I’ve seen the plans for the new library on the other side of town. It’s mostly made of glass and metal and it’s all one floor. It also houses a million other things not related to the library. When I think about it too much my stomach hurts.

While I acknowledge that waiting around for my mental illness to just be "fixed" some day has proven to be an ineffective strategy, this has not yet resulted in me seeking consistent professional help, and even being disingenuous when I have. I am playing the victim and performing some kind of learned helplessness but also am extremely self-critical and full of self-loathing. Frankly. I have no real bearings regarding my personality, or my inner state of being, if any of you were sitting here in front of my I would hardly be able to say a word on the topic. I question whether this is the result of mental decay, general denseness, illness, punishment, what have you. I can conclude that my experience would be generally regarded be as suffering or, at the least, abnormal.
Well, what do you think? Excuses for shit-headery or crippling mental illness? Personally I'm longing for chemical salvation.

I once saw a documentary and there was a cave so huge, they had built a full-size house into it- they could have built another dozen houses into it- it looked so unbelievably comfy and safe.

This is the way of things with all libraries now. I've worked in several. Libraries as we know them are dead, all that's left to give the illusion that they still exist is their husks. The people who built them and understood what they were for, the people who loved them, are all gone. Management is entirely made up of millennial airhead HR women and a few doddering old pre-millennial office crones, somehow even more sociopathic than the airheads.

The airheads have no reverence for learning, they are all bitter that their glory days of being a young spunky slut in Information Science or whatever in college are over and now they're just an increasingly frumpy, increasingly "30ish" woman in some office somewhere. Their heads are full of lukewarm "woke" ideology from their college days and from living on social media for the past 10 years, but they don't even feel strongly about it. It's more like it's the default religion of a small town and they are some anonymous functionary in it. They have just enough power and position in their ersatz religion to enjoy torturing apostates, but not enough to feel passionate about it. It's a way to pass the time.

The post-brutalist glass-and-concrete-and-steel architecture thing is also standard everywhere. Look at ANY new library ANYWHERE. It's all that. It's one giant money laundering scheme, for a closed-off guild of professional architects with no connection to culture or politics. Nobody is really making the "decision" to make the library look that way, it's just "what one does," "one hires a guild member." There's an element of keeping up with the joneses, as the big money donors want to be able to say "WE got Rem Sneedhaus!" even though they'll never actually see the fucking building and don't care to.
