I remember being 18 and reading Dostoevsky and realizing it was great, but it didn't move me one inch closer to religion. On the contrary I felt even more secure in my atheism since I'd read one of the great works of art in defense of religion and I could continue in my atheism from a position of improved knowledge, i.e. having actually read and understood the book. I should read City of God sometime just so I can do the same thing: "Nah, read it, not buying it."
