I compulsively take notes as I read but this slows me down and turns reading into a chore. Is there some way to resolve this?

I don't even blink when I read. I can't afford to drop my WPM. My internet friends would shame me.

When a book gives you a profound idea that you will want to explore further later, write it down. Otherwise, just read. There is no point in writing down everything that happens in the book, as you could look up plot summaries at any time.

Are you taking notes on a computer or something? Pen and paper, you have one hand for the book, one for the pen, with some practice you will be able to jot the note down without even slowing in your reading. It is not terribly difficult, just learning to trust your writing hand to do the task you set it on. I generally just jot down enough to remember what I want to remember and page number, leave a few blank lines between notes and then fill in the details when I am done reading.

Yep, computer and e-reader. I literally type them out before continuing
