I've never seen a better-fitting cover for a book. In a single, supernatural moment all the dread and anxiety you've kept under wraps for years just breaks through

As important as any other paratextual element of a book: it helps communicate its substance.

I was thinking of reading it. Is any prior knowledge regarding either the author or his work necessary? Are there any prerequisites to reading it in the first place?

No, depression is an optional pre-req though. This is not a happy book

I look up any book with an interesting title or if I know the author. I buy the prettiest cover though. Who wouldn't?

It's not unimportant, though I'd say it's less important than an album cover is to an album. As long as it competently conveys the aesthetic of the book then I suppose just about any one would do.

On Goodreads, I always switch my edition to the 1st edition cover for modern books. If the 1st edition is an ugly/shit/blank color with the title on it, then I use the next earliest cover that looks good. For books 19th century and older, I browse the editions looking for the prettiest cover art.

Unless it’s a specific translation or edition, I’ll always go with the best cover from one of the major publishers. Never independently published. Fuck Createdigitalspace or whatever on Amazon

Yes, the author is not the author.
The Book of Disquiet was written by one of Pessoa's heteronyms, Bernardo Soares.
