I found the first few chapters genuinely unsettling and even had trouble sleeping one night after a lengthy reading session. Johnny's snide remarks had me laughing out loud at times. I really liked the interplay between Zampano and Johnny -- his digressions allow you to take little breaks from the main story without really leaving it. The third editorial "layer" I found mostly unnecessary. About two thirds through I thought the book started to lose focus, as if the author had too many lenses he wanted to view The Navidson Record through and just tacked them all on at the end. The topology of the house and the relationship between Navi and Karen is well understood by this point and nothing new is added. I also felt cheated that I spent time decoding Johnny's mum's acrostic letter in the citations/references section without getting any juicy info. Overall I liked it and would recommend.

There's also a bunch messages in the main text of the book that open up some fun interpretations for the book as a whole
If you liked it you should try listening the companion album
