I read it more as a warning about saving a physical copy of 2010 Wikipedia.

Honestly the wacky sci-fi covers kind of make it slightly misleading, given the wealth of themes, but I would say that the gloomy ruined church/solitary monk covers, of which there are several (predominantly red in coloration), are probably the most accurate as to the greater sensation the book gives, the odor or feeling of the whole thing. Like the FF6 "ruined word" theme, with the synth-wind in the background. Because all 3 eras are gloomy, it's just that Fiat Homo hides the gloominess in optimism, Fiat Lux is too busy to care, and Fiat Voluntas Tua just collapses in depression, self-destruction, and hopelessness. That's why I prefer Fiat Homo, despite all the suffering it's still worth it to work on something beautiful, even if its all going to be destroyed in the end. Kind of like the message of the children's film, Secret of Kells.

appreciate the effortpost. do you know any similar sci fi/fantasy? a rather classic/not wacky setting but a fresh interesting sci fi type plot.
i've read The Sparrow, similarly christian-related sci fi, didn't like it tremendously but it wasnt bad. 6/10

Yeah, good point. I didn't mean to say that I was expecting an optimistic book and got pure hopelessness. I meant that I wasn't expecting the theme of the Wandering Jew.

I don't have any recs that reach its level of depth and range--while at the same time being entertaining and humorous and wholesome and comfy and soul-crushingly depressing.

Canticle of Leibowitz doesn't fit so easily in a genre--it's not just some Catholic spinoff of an already established territory. Scifi? It has several mystical characters (poet, jew, Marian tomato-kun) Catholic? The novel isn't pro or anti-church, it just portrays Catholicism accurately, I think, extracting what it is in the lives of Miller's characters dwelling in the immobile foundations of their monastery. It really can be ANALYZED and read again and again.

I mean, it's the kind of novel, where as I mature and my ideas strengthen, I can return to it again, and analyze it all up in a different light, ya know? That's why I bought a hardcopy. I don't think, as long as I live, that this book will become obsolete to me. I mean, as far as I can remember, I've always fantasized about science-monks and spaceships and post-nuclear wastes and epistemology and the usefulness or vanity or danger of technology---so maybe it's just that the book speaks to me, or that I relate with the insecure character of brother Joshua, or admire brother Francis, or feel for the aged abbots, or just want to learn latin. Whatever it is, I doubt I will consider Canticle obsolete

The last third of canticle was so fucking brutal and raw, it fucked me up for a while.

I remember I had to go walk around at night with my hands in my hair and groaning for a while when I couldn't tolerate how fast the novel was just downward spiraling....especially with the damn cat analogy...hell my cat died recently, and naturally and with dignity, thank God. But his gaping mouth, saliva-pool ruffed hair emaciation, raw ulcerated cancer tumor---damn death is ugly. Stiff and ugly. The author really made a hectic and hopeless and mechanical atmosphere

I went in knowing absolutely nothing about it except that it seems popular to Americans. When I was reading it I had an epiphany half way through that it's just early 20th century Irish slice-of-life rubbish.

The eternal juden makes his presence in the book, but is protrayed actually in a largely very profound, if not positive light. Catholic/Jewish dialogue actually occupies a large sequence in the book
